Les pronoms • Pronouns replace NOUNS • Pronouns are used to shorten sentences and make written and spoken language flow better.
Subject Pronouns • You already use SUBJECT PRONOUNS all the time • Subject pronouns are: je / tu / il / elle / on / nous / vous / ils / elles • E.g. Marca 12 ans. Il est grand et mince. Ma soeur et moi aimons les films. Nous allons au cinéma une fois par mois
Direct Object Pronouns • OBJECT pronouns replace the noun which is the object of the sentence • E.g. We’re watching the film. Subject Verb Object We’re watching it.
Direct Object Pronouns • And now in French…….. Nous regardons le film. Subject Verb Object Subject Object Verb Pronoun Nous le regardons. • Note the change of word order!
Direct Object Pronouns • The DIRECT OBJECT PRONOUNS are: me te le la nous vous les me you he/it she/it us you them
Indirect Object Pronouns • Indirect Object Pronouns contain the idea of ‘TO’ someone: • E.g. I’m giving the money to my sister. Subject Verb Object Indirect Object I’m giving the money to her. Subject Verb Object Indirect Object Pronoun

Pronouns of Place • y This pronoun most frequently replaces à + a place or a thing, but can also be used to replace other prepositions of place (sur sous devant derrière) • It is often translated as ‘there’ e.g. Tu es allé en Belgique? Oui – j’ y suis allé deux fois.
Pronouns of Place • y • It is used with verbs which are followed by à + Noun or Verb e.g. 1.Tu joues souvent au football? Oui – j’y joue toutes les semaines. 2.Tu as réussi àfaireça? Oui – j’ y ai réussi.
Pronouns of Place • en • Is used when translating ‘from it’ or ‘from there’ • It most frequently replaces de +a place or a thing e.g. Ton mari est revenu de la France? Oui, il en est revenu jeudi.
Pronouns of Place • en • It is also used in expressions of quantity, translating as ‘some’ or ‘of it/them’ e.g. J’en ai acheté cinq. • It is also used instead of de + verb e.g. Tu te souviens deparlerà ta mere? Oui – je m’en souviens.
