  1. Pertemuan 9Comparisons Matakuliah : Writing 1 Tahun : 2006-2007 Versi : 6

  2. Learning Outcomes • By the end of this session the students are expected to be able to: • Compare past and present situation • Use comparative adjectives/adverbs • Use superlatives • Other ways to describe differences/similarities

  3. In the past… There were many trees in the forest. There was a little creek behind our house. Fifteen years ago, a mobile telephone was as big as a shoe. People sent letters by mail. Now… Most trees in the forest are gone. The creek has dried up. Mobile phones fit in your pocket. People send letters electronically through the internet. The Past and Present

  4. Comparative Adjectives/adverbs • Using ‘-er’ (one syllable adjectives) • Ali is 160 cm tall. • Budi is 172 cm tall.  Budi is taller than Ali. • Using ‘more’ for two or three-syllable adjectives: interesting  more interesting

  5. Spelling 1. two-syllable adjectives ending with y: happy  happier 2. adjectives ending with consonant b, d, f, g, m, n, p, s and t  double the final consonant big  bigger thin thinner 3. two syllables not ending with y: beautiful more beautiful

  6. Superlatives • When you compare more than two objects, you use superlatives to say that one has super quality, better than the rest. e.g. Ali is 1.6 m tall. Budi is 1.72 m tall Leo is 1.8 m tall. • Leo is the tallest among the three boys. • For two syllable or more, use “the most” • Leo is the most handsome boy in the class.

  7. Expressing big/small difference • Comparative adjectives or adverbs are modified by much, a lot, a little, a little bit, or far X He is very older than I am. • He is much older than I am. • Anna drives far more carefully than her husband. • This pen is a little less expensive than the other pen.

  8. Other ways of comparing • Using “as…as” (= the same) • Sri is as diligent as Mona (is). • He runs as fast I do. • His apartment is not (quite) as big as mine. • Using double comparatives: • The harder you study, the more you will learn. • The warmer the weather is, the better I like it.

  9. Conclusions • To compare two or more things you can use comparative adjectives or adverbs. • Superlatives are used by adding the + adjective + est (i.e. the tallest, the nicest, etc.) or the most for three-syllable words. • You can use a bit, much, a little, more/ less, to modify yourcomparatives. • You can also use “as … as” to say that two things are of the same quality.
