  2. Historyof the town San Cipirellowasan area in the outskirtsof San Giuseppe Mortilli. The originof the town, asanindipendenttown, isconnectedto a naturaldisaster – on the 11th March, 1838, after a rainywinter, a frighteninglandslidedestroyed more thanhalfof the town San Giuseppe Mortilli. A royaldecree on the 21st July , 1838, appointedthat the survivorshadtobuildtheirhomes down the valley in the area of San Cipirello, abouthalf a milefrom San Giuseppe Mortilli.

  3. Therewasa smallchurch and 700 inhabitantslivedin San Cipirello in 1841. Later on a townplanprovided the townwith 4 squaresand fountains in the 4 cornersof the mainstreets – cardo and decumano. Itispossibletoseeevennow some marksof the originaltownplan.

  11. Jato Mount The townof San Cipirellois in the valleyofJato Mount. A settlement on Jato Mount dates back the 10th – 9th century BC. In the 4th century BC, Ietas, the oldnameof the town, was under the Carthaginians, buttowards the end ofthiscentury the townwasrebuilt in accordancewith the canonsofGreektown planning and architecture. The people ofIetashandedthemselvesoverto the Romansafter the Carthaginiansweredriven out during the First Punic War (264-241 BC). By the first ImperialAge the apogeeof the townwasover. The Byzantineperiodisdocumentedwithcoins. There are alsosourcesofMuslims and Normans in the town. Thenwhen in the first decadesof the 13th century, the Muslimsriotsagainst the Swabiandynastybegan , the townwastotallydestroyedby the troopsof Frederick II in 1246 and the survivorsweredeportedto Lucera in Apulia and fromthat moment the site wasdefinitelyabandoned.

  14. Saint Mary Virgin Saint Mary Virgin is the saintpatron in San Cipirello. Sheiscelebrated on the 6th, 7th, 8th September.
