  2. Department of Rhetoric and Writing Studies Rhetoric refers to the study and uses of written, spoken and visual language. It investigates how texts are used to organize and maintain social groups, construct meanings and identities, coordinate behavior, mediate power, persuade, produce change, and create knowledge. A rhetorical approach to the teaching of writing is accomplished, in part, by highlighting the rhetorical situation: author, audience, purpose, genre, claim, reason, supporting evidence, context.

  3. Student Population • First Year EL/ESL Students are about .4% of total first year population (2010-2011) • EL/ESL students are predominately transfer students (Fall 2010 – mean GPA of 3.18) • New upper division transfer students: (2008) 72.5% graduate within 4 years of entry: 64.9% graduate within 3 years of entry; 35% graduate within 2 years of entry. • International students are 3% of SDSU population

  8. Program Goals • Facilitate students’ development of college-level proficiency in reading, research, and writing. • Prepare students for new types of writing they may encounter or be required to produce both in and beyond the university setting.
