  1. Creating a Worthwhile Assessment based on a Department SLO Department of Athletics

  2. Process Select a Learning Outcome to assess Develop a list of questions we have related to that SLO Create the Plan (what, how, when) Complete Assessment Worksheet (from DAT) Create the tool (survey) Collect the Data (survey & focus group) Organize the Data

  3. Selecting an SLO “Student-Athletes will have the knowledge and skills to successfully balance college life (academic, social, work, etc) and their athletic commitments.”

  4. Why Assess this SLO? Examples of what we were hearing: Freshmen athletes (mainly fall sports), struggle to connect to the college or peers due to athletic demands. That some recruited athletes quit before their season even starts because they don’t think they will be able to balance all the work.

  5. What did we hope to learn? Do in fact student-athletes have the knowledge and skills to balance college life and athletics in the first semester? If so, what balancing strategies are athletes using? In what ways can the Athletic Department support their needs better in the first semester?

  6. The Plan Complete Assessment Planning Worksheet (provided by DAT—to be completed and turned in with Department Annual Report & to IR office in May) Decide who will be responsible Create timeline

  7. Creating the Tool Survey was created using the following resources: • Old Freshmen Student Athlete on-line Survey • MAP (Making Achievement Possible) survey from the former First Year Center • NCAA Self Study Report Survey Included: • General “yes/no” questions • Scaled questions about the impact of playing a sport on various aspects of their life • Scaled questions about their current abilities • Several short answer questions

  8. Gathering Data Mandatory Survey for 1st Semester Freshmen Student Athletes 86 Surveys were completed by the 120 Freshmen athletes (72%) Successful Delivery Tips: • Use whatever leverage you can • Don’t let students walk away with a survey

  9. Gathering Data Coaches Focus Group: After Survey Data was collected and analyzed, we shared information with coaches. Focus Group Goals: Gather coach opinions on findings Learn of any additional concerns they have of their freshmen Find out what ways coaches felt we could support freshmen Student-Athlete needs better.

  10. Organizing the Data Input all raw qualitative data into a spreadsheet • Calculated percentages and averages Consolidated all qualitative short answer data. • Listed each response • Color Coded by theme • Calculated percentages per theme Summarized Coach comments from the focus group

  11. Example of How we Themed Qualitative Data

  12. Now What? Current Step--Analyzing the Data: • Looking deeper within the themes • Creating some useful graphs to illustrate findings • Next Steps: • Summarize Findings • Compare Findings with other assessments • Create Action Steps • Write Final Report

  13. Questions? Comments? Thank you !
