AVID? What is that?
THANK YOU!!! Thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to view this power point. We are in need of your help in locating and recruiting students for the AVID program. The number of 8th graders that we are looking for is unlimited, but we only want students who fit the AVID criteria that will be discussed later in this presentation. We look forward to working with you as we create the AVID freshmen class for the 2009-2010 school year
The Mission of AVID The mission of AVID is to ensure that ALL students, and most especially the least served students who are in the middle: • will succeed in rigorous curriculum, • will complete a rigorous college preparatory path, • will enter mainstream activities of the school, • will increase their enrollment in four-year colleges, and • will become educated and responsible participants and leaders in a democratic society.
In a nutshell? Most, not all, AVID students are underrepresented minorities -- Latinos and African-Americans -- who may lack a college-going tradition in their family and whose success is critical to closing the achievement gap. Students who sit in your class and need a push!
The AVID Student Profile Students with Academic Potential • Average to High Test Scores • 2.0-3.5 GPA • College Potential with Support • Desire and Determination Meets One or More of the Following Criteria • First to Attend College • Historically Underserved in 4-year Colleges • Low Income • Special Circumstances
Continuing Education AVID graduates are continuing to perform well in college with a mean GPA of 2.94
AVID is a group, a family away from home, that encourages thinking outside of the box and wants to help you learn to be a life-long learner. AVID helps you learn what it takes to be a successful college student and push for more. AVID is all about a more rigorous schedule, but giving you the materials you need not to fail, but to reach the highest star possible and still be successful. This is what students need to know
What is AVID not? • AVID isn't a remedial program. • AVID isn't a free ride. • AVID isn't a placement program. • AVID isn’t for those students who do not want to attend college • AVID is not a behavior correction program
Okay, so what does that mean to me? • We are looking for students to join AVID next year. • We have approximately 100 openings and need your help to find them.
