  1. Active Directory Replication

  2. IntraSite Replication • Topology generated automatically by Knowledge Consistency Checker (KCC) • Creates replication partners • Up to three DCs, all are replication partners of each other • Maximum of three hops to complete replication • Changes generally replicated within 5 minutes (maximum 15 minutes to replicate to all DCs) • Urgent changes replicated immediately (e.g. password changes) • Can create topology manually (but don’t)

  3. IntraSite Replication cont. • Use AD Sites and Services to view replication partners • NTDS Settings for server • Can manually force replication • Use Replication Monitor (Support Tools) • Repadmin (command line)

  4. InterSite Replication • Site — group of subnets • Replication Topology determined automatically • InterSite Replication compressed • Can be scheduled • Configure using AD Sites and Services • More likely to want to configure intersite replication topology etc. manually

  5. Replication Conflicts • Attributes replicated, not objects • Less conflicts • E.g. phone no. change on one DC and office no. change on another for same user will not conflict — both will occur • Methods of dealing with other conflicts, e.g. renaming objects, moving same object

  6. Viewing Replication Topology • Replmon (support tools) • AD Sites and Services • Sites/Sitename/Servers/Servername/NTDS Settings

  7. Manual Replication Using Active Directory Sites and Services • Right click on connection entry and choose Replicate Now • NB One-way replication, i.e. only replicates from replication partner shown in From Server column to server whose NTDS Settings you are viewing • To replicate in both directions must do same with connection to this server under partner’s NTDS Settings

  8. Manual Replication Using Replication Monitor • More flexible • Synchronize DC with all other servers • Right-click on server name/Synchronize each directory partition with all servers • Synchronize a partition with all other servers • Right-click on CN entry/Synchronize this directory partition with all servers • Synchronize a partition with a replication partner • Right-click on replication partner entry below CN entry/Synchronize with this replication partner
