Government ICT Strategy – GreenGreen in Government • Co-ordinated by the GDU – cross government Green Delivery Unit • SRO for Green ICT is John Taylor, CIO @ MoD • Chair of GDU is Jennifer Rigby, CIO @ DECC (until next week) • Greening Government Commitments – March 2011 – to ensure reductions in waste generation, water use and greenhouse gas emissions by 2015 • GDU published Greening Government: ICT Strategy in October 2011

Government ICT Strategy – GreenMaturity Model • Greening Government Strategy also created a Maturity Model for Green ICT. • Aim is for all Departments to reach level 3 in all categories by 2015 • First iteration was in April 2012 • GDU’s Annual Report – published in June 2012 – included a summary of the results from the Maturity Model • Completed by 12 departments. Average score was 2.4 • Home Office score was 2.3

Government ICT Strategy – GreenWhat’s going on in the Home Office • There are a number of initiatives going on in the Home Office • Single device policy • 100% recycled ‘closed loop’ paper • Endorser status for EU Datacentre Code of Conduct • Power save settings on PCs where possible • Addition of power consumption information to CMDB • Go Digital – initiative to reduce travel using video & audio conf.

Government ICT Strategy – GreenWhat should I be doing? • Consider whether you really need all your devices • Turn off what you don’t need • Don’t print if you don’t have to • Recycle what you do print • Consider whether you really need to travel • Make sure you & your teams know how to use video and audio conferencing • Keep ‘Green’ in mind when you are drawing up requirements, designing solutions or evaluating business cases.

Government ICT Strategy – GreenAnd Remember On March 23rd2MS will join hundreds of millions of people across the globe in switching off the lights for one hour – Earth Hour, the world’s largest public environmental action to show its commitment to this and other actions that benefit the planet in the year ahead. Look out for special events in 2MS and elsewhere from March 4th to 10th.
