  2. Themes • For a short time the Maurayan and Gupta empires brought integration to India. • Indians developed Buddhism and Hinduism. • India exported Buddhism in cross-cultural exchange.

  3. In the first century C.E. Buddhists erected a pillar containing this frieze of a stupa housing relics of the Buddha. The stupa is surrounded by throngs of worshipers and pilgrims making music and bringing offerings to honor the Buddha.
