Warm-Up/Discuss Explanation of Mythology and Religion Video Reinforcement with Guided questions Review Homework WIO/Closure • WIO: WIO: Using acquired knowledge from today's lesson, and prior knowledge to answer the following prompt in 3 complete sentences. Why would Religion and Mythology be an important aspect of Ancient Greece? What did mythology and religion provide for the Greeks? • Homework: • Research a Greek Myth on your own, and complete THE Greek Myth Explanation and breakdown WS. Requirements of a Classical Greek Myth • Ancient Greece is well known for its stories of gods, goddesses, and heroes. • The word myth comes from the ancient Greek word mythos, which means “a spoken or written story.” Basically, a myth is a story with a purpose. • Myths attempt to give explanations for events in the natural world among humans and between deities. • Myths can teach societal standards, rules, and expectations in a way that interests the listener. • Myths often have spiritual or religious meaning. Every culture, including our own, has its own myths.

A Classical Greek Myth: • Explains a natural phenomenon or the creation of something • Depicts a struggle between good and evil • Shows a relationship between mortals and the supernatural • Contains magical characters, gods, goddesses, nymphs, giants, etc. • Sometimes depicts a hero’s quest to accomplish a great feat • Makes reference to geological places and cultural aspects of ancient Greece

  5. Olympian Family Tree • Which of these Greek Gods did you have prior Knowledge about? • Where have you seen, or heard about these figures before? • Do you have a favorite god, or goddess? Why?

  6. Greek Gods and Goddess Questions: Early Greek Mythology began with figures other than the Olympians' that we consider the Greek Gods. Who are these figures, and what role do they play in Ancient Greece’s belief in the creation of the world? How did the Gods view humans/man-kind? Why do you think this? Why do you believe mythology would have multiple versions of Human Races in Ancient Greece? Why were women portrayed negatively in Ancient Greece Mythology? Why is “Hope” such an important aspect to man-kind in Ancient Greece? Who controls/represents Hope for man-kind? If women are considered a negative thing in this patriarchal society, then why would a woman be given this “gift? What is one question that you still have about Ancient Greek Mythology?

Greece Mythology Reading Read the passage that I have provided for you, and discuss the following with your neighbors: • What questions do you still have about Ancient Greek Mythology? • What information that learned today did you find most interesting? • If you were a Greek God- Who would you be and why? What attributes/powers do they possess that you find attractive and why?
