  1. WHAT ARE SPECIAL EDUCATION AND ITS ROLE? Special education is often a great unknown for most parents. Unfortunately, even for parents of students with special needs, it can also feel the same. Now the question is, what are Special education and its essence. If we look at the past, special education often meant a special classroom for extraordinary students-of varying physical, emotional, and learning needs. Now the performance of special education is integrated and changing. If you are still wondering about the true essence of Special Education, we are here to help you. IEP:-The Gateway to Special Education Any student who has an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) is considered a student who receives special education service. There must be some questions coming into your mind about the connection between students and IEP. After a formal evaluation through the local education system, a student will qualify for the IEP.

After the determination that the child is eligible for special education service, the IEP meeting is planned from there. In any condition, parents have the right to agree or disagree with the finding the recommendations. When the IEP is finalized, the service of special education starts, and the student is considered to be the recipient of such education. The Setting: The student who is qualified to receive special education services can be serviced in the general education room. It is an integrated or collaborative team teaching classroom with two teachers (Special educator and general educator). The self-contained classroom is often mentioned by the ratio of 12:1, where 12 students and one special teacher. Accommodation Process: The accommodation process includes specific means of transportation, test-taking, modified resources, and access to assistive technology, preferential seating, and many more. The testing accommodations are often most popular, but accommodation can be noticed in and any combination. Services: Special services that students receive with IEP are distinctly outlined within the document. Usually, they refer to speech, therapy, physical therapy, or occupational therapy. SETSS (Special Education Teacher Support Service), Counseling, and many more. These all services are performed systematically by the special teacher. Misconceptions about the Special Education: There are many misconceptions available to surround us regarding special education. Let's find out the contrary to what you may have heard. Special Students are not marked in any sense or any way that will pursue them through higher education or adulthood. Such education is possible within the general classroom setting, and not anymore automatically means a special classroom is necessary. A student can have a physical disorder and not mandatory special education. A basic understanding of Special Education is required to address appropriately.
