  1. Safety Guidelines to Follow While Using Pocket Knives There are some basic safety concerns attached to the upkeep of pocket knives. Whether you are going on an expedition or getting your first knife, a lot of consideration needs to be paid on their safety and maintenance.

  2. Here are few tips to help you get a better idea about the right upkeep of your knives: Whenever you are using a knife, ensure that you are at a minimal distance of 1 1/2 arm lengths. This is also referred as the ‘Circle of Blood'. This is also advisable to keep your knife at a safe distance from others.

  3. To pass a knife to another person, always offer the butt end of the handle. The spine of your knife should be towards the palm; however, the blade should be away from your skin.

  4. Never walk with an open knife. If you are supposed to relocate, always close the knife first. When you are opening a knife, hold the closed knife in your left hand. The blades should be facing upwards during the method. Put your right finger and thumb on the spine of blade to open the knife. Similarly, close the knife ensuring the blade is facing upwards. Patience is the key while closing the blade. Make sure that you don’t end up poking the tip of the knife in your palm or snapping it on your fingers.

  5. Always hold the knife handle in your left hand (blade facing upwards again) and release the lock with your right hand, in case of Liner Lock Knives. Don’t hold the blade as it may injure your fingers while closing rapidly.
