  2. How long will my hip or knee replacement last? Nothing is permanent - There is no guarantee. The life of any product comes with an expiry date but it does not mean that it will last that long or that it will not last after that period. We cannot say for sure but the expected length of life of a product can be predicted in ideal conditions. There may be a lot of internal, and external forces acting to increase or decrease the life of a product. So is the case with Knee and Hip replacements. There are many factors internal and external affecting the joint replacements which will affect the life of the replacement. These replacements surely provide a very major improvement in life quality and better motion and function to people suffering from particular conditions where their joint is stiff, painful or locked. The knee surgery is a cost-saver in the long run and improves the quality of your life and gives you a discomfort-free life after it is done for a long long time. If the first surgery surpasses its period or has some problem in the implant a correctional surgery can be done to rectify the problem which is known as revision surgery.

  3. No hip or knee replacement surgery can be given a 100% success guarantee or a lifetime service guarantee. No operation can always be fully successful and nothing can last forever. There are a lot of factors that matter to the life of a replaced joint and can alter its life in both ways, either increase it or decrease it. The factors like the experience of the surgeon in conducting such surgeries, the number of surgeries being done by the surgeon, the method and the extend of injury adjacent to the joint could be a very deciding factor in the success of the joint replacement. Other factors are related to the patient that determines the success and life of the surgery like age, weight and activity level aspired after the surgery. Just to understand how the factors affect let us look into one factor called the weight of the patient or in general terms known as obesity which can put more pressure on the new implant and cause it to wear out faster or malfunction due to excess weight. This may need revision surgery sooner. But it is not the case with every obese person. It has seen to be successful in most of the cases where joint has been replaced for obese people.

  4. The past data and the life expectancy of the products being used for total or partial joint replacements are pointing towards a huge 10-15 years of top-class working of the knee if the surgery has been done properly. The data and the implant manufacturers say that the life expectancy is calculated at a very low level than it could be to give the patient and the surgeon a realistic time frame for the proper working of the replaced joint. It is sure to work more than the quoted period and have people not needing a revision surgery for more than 20 years have been recorded. The lifetime of an implant or the joint replacement can be increased if we give the components idea conditions to last longer. Losing weight before surgery, improved implant and replacement components, better surgical techniques and dedicated and proper rehabilitation after surgery will surely give more success rate to the surgery and simultaneously the proper care of the joint will surely make it last longer.
