  1. ALICE Outreach News • ALICE Visits • Outreach material • Various • LHC restart + media day • Masterclasses ALICE OUTREACH NEWS Despina Hatzifotiadou EPPOG Meeting 30 October 2009 CERN

  2. ALICE Visits ALICE has been flooded with visits ~2900 visitors this year • Schools, Universities (1540) • Private visitors - family and friends (540) • Collaborators (176) • VIPs (225) • Professional visitors (390) • Photographers, film makers, television crews, journalists.. (63) • Main attraction : underground visit • Surface exhibition at Point 2 • What will we offer to the public after LHC starts ? ALICE OUTREACH NEWS Despina Hatzifotiadou EPPOG Meeting 30 October 2009 CERN

  3. Outreach Material Effort to document the consolidation and installation work done during the shutdown with films and photographs New photographs on CDS (by Max Brice) 360 degrees photograph of the cavern before closing EMCAL installation Miniframe Reinstallation • Films on CDS (by CERN Audiovisual Service and Communications) • LHC news : ALICE gets beam (from transfer line T12 tests 11-12 July 2009) • http://cdsweb.cern.ch/record/1191155 • LATEST WORK IN ALICE ( July 2009) • http://cdsweb.cern.ch/record/1194734 ALICE OUTREACH NEWS Despina Hatzifotiadou EPPOG Meeting 30 October 2009 CERN

  4. Outreach Material Interactive presentation of ALICE + simulation of collisions (by Warsaw University of Technology) Recently translated to english - will be included in exhibition at P2 ALICE OUTREACH NEWS Despina Hatzifotiadou EPPOG Meeting 30 October 2009 CERN

  5. ALICE corner building 40 Install 180 X 360 cm2 poster with first events (cosmics - multimuons, injection..) ALICE OUTREACH NEWS Despina Hatzifotiadou EPPOG Meeting 30 October 2009 CERN

  6. Various Big Screen (+Computer) to be installed at the entrance of ALICE building Show event displays from real data Test bench for similar installation in the townhall of Sergy Could be duplicated inside CERN and outside (ALICE institutes) Austrian student doing interdisciplinary PhD is working on Sonification* of ALICE data - end product can be used in exhibition The TPC treated as "Sonic Wire Chamber", where the electrons impact on strings of different frequency *Sonification is a new method of data display and is defined as the use of audio to convey information. ALICE OUTREACH NEWS Despina Hatzifotiadou EPPOG Meeting 30 October 2009 CERN

  7. Plans for LHC restart • Accept 1 TV crew / up to 5 persons from media inside ALICE Control Room • Install big screen for event displays outside control room • Setup “welcome” area outside control room (coffee corner) • Install tables where people can sit for interviews, if necessary • Use Conference Room at Point 2 (3294-R-008) for interviews/working space • Can consider doing short presentations in 3294-R-008 if there is time • Show Point 2 exhibition to explain the experiment if there is time for the press • Have “dedicated” person who can inform/update press about what is happening in ALICE • Need input as to the number of media expected and duration of their stay ALICE OUTREACH NEWS Despina Hatzifotiadou EPPOG Meeting 30 October 2009 CERN

  8. Plans for LHC restart • CERN Audiovisual Service will have camera permanently installed inside ACR • ALICE photographers taking photographs inside ACR • Load photographs on web page for collaborators and media • Put event displays on dedicated web site for collaborators and media • The details to be elaborated ALICE OUTREACH NEWS Despina Hatzifotiadou EPPOG Meeting 30 October 2009 CERN

  9. ALICE plans for Masterclasses • Proposed exercise (to be implemented by the Birmingham group) • Measure strangeness production in reference sample and “interesting” event sample / compare • Strangeness enhancement is one of the signatures for production of Quark-Gluon Plasma • Analyse sets of events containing strange particles including cascades (Ω- Ξ- ) and V0s • Ω- -> Λ + K- ( Λ -> p + π- ) • Ξ- -> Λ + π- ( Λ -> p + π- ) • Classify cascade according to topology + PID • Count number of strange particles and calculate ratios • Tools : • Standard ALICE Event Display (AliEVE) • special tool for V0 and cascade visual analysis (developed by Strasbourg group) • Data sets to be used : Start with Monte Carlo and later real data • Start with proton-proton (low multiplicity sample + high multiplicity sample) • Then light ions • Pb-Pb collisions complicated - events difficult to analyse by eye - time consuming ALICE OUTREACH NEWS Despina Hatzifotiadou EPPOG Meeting 30 October 2009 CERN
