  2. The simple present tense. I/ Auxiliary verbs: * Examples: • I go to school every day. • He goes to school every day. • We don’t get up at 6 o’clock. • Does he learn English?

  3. The simple present tense. 1) Form: (+) I, we, you, they + V‏. He, she, it + V(s/es). (-) I, we, you, they + don’t + V. ( don’t = do not) He, she, it + doesn’t + V. ( doesn’t = does not) (?) What + do I, we, you, they + V ? What does + he/ she, it + V ?

  4. The simple present tense. * Yes/No – questions and answers. • Do I/ you/ we/ they + V ? Yes, I do / No, I don’t. ( don’t = do not) • Does she/ he/ it + V ? Yes, she does / No, she doesn’t. ( doesn’t = does not)

  5. The simple present tense. 2) The rules of adding “s or es”. we add “s” in the most of the verbs if the subject is He, She, It in the positive sentence. • He works • Nga reads books • She writes

  6. The simple present tense. We add “es” in the verbs, which end with “ o, s, x, ch, sh” if the subject is He,She, It in the positive sentence. • Tom goes to the zoo at weekends. • Lan always passes exams. • She relaxes. • The water freezes at zero degree. • He watches TV. • She washes her face.

  7. The simple present tense. We change “y” into “i” + “es” for the verbs which end with “y” and come before it with a consonant. • She studies English. • He hurries up. But: - I play – he plays. - We enjoy - Hoa enjoys. ( So, if the verb which end with “y” and come before it a vowel we only add “s”.)

The rules of the pronunciation “s,es” a) Pronounced /s/ for the verbs end with the sounds: /p, k, f, t, 0 /. - gets, talks, stops, wants, laughs, … b)Pronounced /z/ for the verbs end with the sounds: /b, l, m, n, v, r, g, ng/. - sends, loves, learns, seems, sings, … c) Pronounced /iz/ for the verbs end with the sounds or the letters “x, s, ch, sh, ce, ge”. - relaxes, watches, brushes, washes, places, fridges, … But : say /sei/ - says /sez/ do /du:/ - does /daz/

The simple present tense. 4) Usage: * Example 1: • I get up at 5 a.m every morning. • He often goes to school at 6.30 a.m. So, the simple present is used toexpress an action, which happens every day. ( It often has “ adverbs of frequency” going with.)‏ ( Adverbs: - always, usually, often, sometimes, seldom, rarely, never. - Every day/ week/ month/ … - Once a (per) week/ twice a (per) week/ month/ year, …)

  10. The simple present tense. * Example 2: • The Earth moves around the Sun. • Trees grow well in spring. So, the simple present is used toexpress a truth or a permanence.

  11. The simple present tense. II/ “To Be”: 1) Form: (+) I am … He, she, it is … We, you, they are … (-) I am not … He, she, it is not … ( is not = isn’t) We, you, they are not … ( are not = aren’t) (?) Who am I ? Who is he, she, it is ? Who are you, we, they ?

  12. The simple present tense. * Yes/No- questions and answers: - Are you a student? Yes, I am / No, I am not. • Is he a student? Yes, he is / No, he isn’t. ( isn’t = is not) - Are they students? Yes, they are. / No, they aren’t. ( aren’t = are not)

  13. The simple present tense. 2) Usage: “ To be” is used to tell about: + Name: My name is Lan. + Age: She is eleven. + Job: He is an engineer. + Adjectives: You are beautiful. + Present progressive tense: We are speaking English now.
