  • Your tool for this quick analysis = the Universal Business Model (UBM).

UBM = way to understand any organisation /company.

assignment 4 what 1
Assignment 4: What? (1)

Together with an IHM classmate you choose a IHM company or organisation.

Try to find a company or organisation that has a website where they not only present what they offer as products / services but also who they are.

7

assignment 4 what 2
Assignment 4: What? (2)
  • Describe your organisation according to UBM.
  • In your assignment you need to describe 6 out of the 10 UBM aspects:
    • IDENTITY,
    • PURPOSE,
    • STRUCTURE,
    • PARTICIPANTS
    • ACTIVITIES and
    • DELIVERABLES.

8

assignment 4 what 3
Assignment 4: What? (3)
  • First: Desk research about your company
  • Second: Have an interview with the organisation.
  • During interview also ask about if the organisation is willing to cooperate with students of CAU.

For example:

- summer placements,

- possibilities for final thesis,

- excursions,

- guest lecturers.

Ask them what they expect from students who want to do a summer placement with them!

assignment 4 approach 1
Assignment 4: Approach (1)

Study the UBM model. See the information of this lecture and www.howarddowding.com.

Choose company/organization (in pairs) and get approval

Collect information through the internet, brochures and other sources

Focus on the 6 aspects identity, purpose, structure, participants, activities and deliverables

Make a start with your report

Present the information in one chapter per aspect. Use paragraphs for the underlying elements.

assignment 4 approach 2
Assignment 4: Approach (2)

Organise a meeting/interview with the manager of the organisation, after!!! your desk search.

Prepare yourself well! What do you need to know to complete the UBM? Make a check-list. Refine the check-list, based on who you’ll meet.

Do the visit and interview.

Use the information of the interview to complete the UBM.

For all information in your report make clear where you got it from (company website, interview, flyer, other organization, you saw it yourself etc.).

assignment 4 approach 3
Assignment 4: Approach (3)

Still information gaps? If yes: do your very best to add to the report what’s still missing. E.g. call the company etc.

If it’s really impossible to get the information, write in your report which information is missing and why.

Report on the possible cooperation (placement+ thesis possibilities, excursions and guest lectures) between the organisation and CAU (students) in a separate chapter.
