  1. Shake it off – Taylor Swift Analysis

  2. Stats and genre • The song is of the pop genre and was a hit when it was released 8 years ago and is still a very much listened to song. • After going viral in 2014, the music video made by vevohas since reached 3.3 billion views on YouTube. • On Spotify it has 1.6 billion streams

  3. More genre points • The music video features lots of typical pop genre scenes such as dance performances, which are shown throughout the video but at the same time not trying to steal the light from Taylor because she has never been a good dancer. Another aspect that is stereotypical to the pop genre is Taylor singing with a band. The instruments which we can see is a keyboard, drums and guitar. There is also a saxophone which is ironic because the song does not feature any sax.

  4. Taylors target audience • Taylor swift has a main target audience of young teenage girls who aspire to be like her however, this does not mean this is her only target of people to reach. She is often sexualized as an artist which is a tactic to attract teenage boys or older men to being to follow her. She is seen in the video in lots of different costumes one including quite a masculine cool hip-hop look which could suggest she is aiming to attract a new genre/range of people

  5. opening Throughout the video, depending on the set which in this part is a ballerina dance studio it cuts on beat to a close up motion shot of the theme. Here we see a ballerina performing. We first see a mid shot of Taylor in a ballerina costume. This establishing shot tells the audience who the star is, before she is joined by lots of other ballerinas and blends in. On the lyrics “got nothing on my brain” Taylor points to her brain. This is a link between the music and the visuals supported by Andrew Goodwin's theory. A wide shot of all the ballerinas, showing off the costume and extras, whilst showing that Taylor is a star and stands out.

  6. Set and costume change A mid shot to establish the new costume and set including new extras. A low angle shows importance of the artist. This scene shows a more fun and tom boy side of Taylor which helps to appeal to a larger audience. Consistent theme of repetition. Constant cutting to action sequences showing off the casts talent to keep the energy of the video up.

  7. Link between lyrics and visuals The lyrics “I shake it off, I shake it off” is her way of saying that she shakes off any hate that comes her way and doesn't’t let it get to her. However, she contrast this by making it come across as upbeat and fun to show that nothing can hurt her. As the lyrics are repeated, either her or another person in the video is shaking their video to demonstrate ‘shaking it off’.

  8. Intertextual references In this set, Taylor and her back up dancers have a strong resemblance of the music video ‘Get Lucky’ by daft punk which is also vevo. Although it is not in as much detail as Daft punk, it is defiantly easily noticeable for the average audience member as get lucky is so iconic and famous, especially considering both videos were released just over a year apart. Taylor Swift – ‘Shake It Off’ Daft Punk – ‘Get Lucky’

  9. Intertextual references Another intertextual reference within this video is one referring to Beyoncé's music video of her song “mine’ released in 2014 (same year as shake it off). Throughout Shake it off there are many different scene changes with different personas, this could be a direct link to the many different rumors surrounding Taylor, Particularly surrounding her true personality/persona. Taylor Swift – ‘Shake It Off’ Beyoncé – ‘Mine’

  10. Notion of looking references In this shot, Taylor is seen looking at other women doing a sexual dance, when she probably shouldn't’t be as it looks unnatural. The way she is looing at them and the low angle she is looking from, suggests that she is attracted to them. This again could be another intertextual references regarding rumors about here this one focusing on her being lesbian.

  11. Artist image and branding The consistent repetition of Taylor in different outfits with a different persona, showing off different talents is a very unique way of branding and seeing the artist. Close up shots of of her face in the different costumes remind the audience that she has played many different personas.
