  1. Measuring Claw Curvature

  2. Find all the claws from the specimen you are dealing with; deal with only one specimen at a time! You will only measure the claws from one foot. If the claws are still attached to the other phalanges, gently break them off. If all the claws are loose in the box, sort them into pairs (as above); each set of four will then represent the claws from one foot. Scan the claws from only one foot at 600 dpi. Enlarge the images of the talons, space them out well on the page, print them off and follow the directions on the next slides.

  3. Step 1. Draw chord AB from the tip of the claw (A) to the anterior margin of the tubercle at the base of the phalanx (B). Step 2. Draw chord CD half way between A and B, and perpendicular to chord AB. C B A D

  4. Step 3. Draw in chords AX and XB. Step 4. Perpendiculars are drawn to bisect AX and XB. Step 5. Draw the final two chords AE’ and E’B. Step 6. With a protractor, measure the angle between AE’ and E’B. E’’ C X E B D A E’ Record the average angle for all the available toes from one foot.
