April 19, 2010 WEBINAR Presentation Targets • Brief review of #E2SSB 6696 • Describe the purpose and goals of the TPEP Regional Implementation Grant and BISD’s participation • Outline the timelines for researching and piloting new teacher and principal evaluation systems • Define an instructional framework • Discuss challenges and opportunities

Formative Assessment (AKA: Pop quiz) • What has the largest school based influence on student achievement? • “Teachers are the greatest school-based influence on student achievement.” (Nye, Konstantopolous & Hedges, 2004). • What has the second largest influence on student achievement? • “Leadership is second only to classroom instruction as an influence on student learning.” Wallace Foundation Study, July 2010.

Tiered Evaluation System • Four tier system for teachers and principals with eight separate criteria for each • Student growth = change in student achievement between two points in time • Multiple measures = classroom, school, district, and statewide tools 5 WASA Superintendent’s Workshop 2010

  8. Teacher/Principal Evaluation Pilot Regional Implementation Consortia Grant (RIG) • District, BIEA, and Principal association jointly applied • Only 7 districts selected for the Puget Sound Educational Service District • We will receive approx. $7,000 to support this process

  9. RIG continued: What will we do? • We are the 2nd round of pilot districts • We will learn from what the 1st round of districts have already done • We will Collaborate with our RIG colleagues in creating and implementing new evaluation systems

April 19, 2010 WEBINAR Challenges and opportunities • Tight timeline • Details, details, details, • What type of evidence do we use (e.g. student data, other “artifacts” etc. • How is a total score/rating determined? • How do we train teachers/principals? • This work is aligned to what we are already doing • MAP data • Great opportunity to foster continual professional growth model • New evaluation models will help align our efforts (e.g. P.D., recruitment, etc.)
