  3. Ar-Raḥman & Ar-Raḥīm • ar-Rahman and ar-Rahim derives from Mercy (Rahmah) • Ar-Rahman falls on the exaggerated scale of al-Fa’lan which means it is more general than ar-Rahim. • The preferred translation is thus ar-Rahman “the Entirely Merciful” and ar-Rahim “the Especially Merciful”. • What does that mean? • Many exegesis exists among the scholars, one of them stating that ar-Rahman is Allah’s Mercy to all – Muslim and non Muslim; while ar-Rahim is specifically for Muslims. 4. Ar-Raḥman & Ar-Raḥīm • Al-Gazzali however opines that ar-Rahmanreferrs specifically to Allah’s Mercy in relation to eternal bliss – thus ar-Rahman would mean, • 1. the Compassionate towards His slaves by creating them, 2. by guiding them to faith and to the means of salvations, 3. by making them happy in the afterlife and 4. by granting them a viewing of His Noble Wajh (Countenance). The 99 Beautiful Names of Allah: Gateways into Tawhid

  5. Ar-Raḥman & Ar-Raḥīm • The vastness of Allah’s Mercy • The day Allah created Mercy, He created it into one hundred parts. He withheld with Him ninety-nine parts, and sent one part to all His creatures. Had the non-believer known of all the Mercy which is in the Hands of Allah, he would not lose hope of entering Paradise, and had the believer known of all the punishment which is present with Allah, he would not consider himself safe from the Hell-Fire. [Bukhari] The 99 Beautiful Names of Allah: Gateways into Tawhid

  6. Ar-Raḥman & Ar-Raḥīm • The vastness of Allah’s Mercy • The Prophet said to us, “Do you think this woman could throw her child in the fire?” We said, “No, not if she is able to stop it.” The Prophet said, “Allah is more merciful to His servants than a mother is to her child.” The 99 Beautiful Names of Allah: Gateways into Tawhid

  7. Ar-Raḥman & Ar-Raḥīm • Man’s share in names Ar-Rahman: • His share lies in showing Mercy to the negligent, dissuading them from the path of negligence towards Allah by exhortation and counselling, by way of gentleness not violence. • Man’s share in names Ar-Rahman: • In not turning away from any needy persons without meeting their needs to the extent of his ability. The 99 Beautiful Names of Allah: Gateways into Tawhid

  8. Ar-Raḥman & Ar-Raḥīm • Muhammad saw: A mercy to the worlds. • JâbiribnSamura said, "I prayed with the Messenger of Allah, may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him, the first prayer, then he went out and I went out with him. He was met by some children and rubbed their cheeks one by one. As for myself, he rubbed my cheek and I found that his hand was cool and fragrant, as if he had just taken it out of a perfume vendor's bag The 99 Beautiful Names of Allah: Gateways into Tawhid

Since all creation is in need of Allah and it cannot be conceived that all of creation be in need of him. • He continues: • The true king among men is the one who realizes that in reality only Allah is the Absolute King. For this reason he is always and ever totally dependent upon Allah. The 99 Beautiful Names of Allah: Gateways into Tawhid

  13. Al-Malik – The King • That kingdom which is his ... is his heart and his physical body. His troops are his appetite, anger and passion. His subjects are his tongue, eyes, hands and the remainder of his organs. He achieves the rank of a king in the world when he controls them and they do not control him; when they obey him and he does not obey them. • ShaykhShuayb Abu Madyan thus exclaims: • ما لذة العيش إلا صحبة الفقراء هم السلاطين والسادات والأمراء • There is no delight in life besides the companionship of the Fuqara’.
