  1. Accessibility and Reasonable Accommodation Presented by: Monsur Ahmed Chowdhury Member Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

  2. The CRPD pulls together all our fundamental, civic, political, social, economic, and cultural rights into one document, and gives it teeth with a legally binding status.

  3. Accessibility & reasonable accommodation could contribute so much towards ensuring our dignity!

  4. Recalling the principles proclaimed in the charter of the United Nations which recognize the inherent dignity and worth and the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family as the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the World.

  5. UNCRPD Article 9 on Accessibility states: • To enable persons with disabilities to live independently and participate fully in all aspects of life • States Parties shall also take appropriate measures

  6. What a planner needs to keep in mind are: • Special needs created by the disability • Potential benefit that can be accomplished by the requested accommodation • Potential impact on surrounding uses • Physical attributes of and any proposed changes to the subject properly and structures

  7. Alternatives which may provide an equivalent level of benefit • Whether the requested accommodation would impose an undue financial or administrative burden • Whether the requested accommodation would require a substantial alteration in the nature or effect of a program or policy

  8. Whether the requested accommodation would result in a concentration of uses otherwise not allowed in a residential neighborhood to the substantial detriment of the residential character of that neighborhood. • whether the requested accommodation is consistent with the general standard housing act/code • Any other factor that may have a bearing on the request.

  9. Priority needs to be determined • Right to education • Right to employment • Right to healthcare
