  3. Romans 12:9 – Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. • ESV - Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. • Genuine • actually having the reputed or apparent qualities or character • sincerely and honestly felt or experienced • Sincere • having or showing true feelings that are expressed in an honest way • genuine or real : not false, fake, or pretended

  4. Romans 12:9 – Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. The Greek word agape (love) seems to have been virtually a Christian invention – a new word for a new thing (apart from about twenty occurrences in the Greek version of the Old Testament, it is almost non-existent before the New Testament). Agape draws its meaning directly from the revelation of God in Christ. It is not a form of natural affection, however, intense, but a supernatural fruit of the Spirit (Gal 5:22). It is a matter of will rather than feeling. --James Packer

  5. Romans 12:9 – Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Who do we love? Romans 12: 10 - 21 • Honor one another above yourselves • Patient in affliction • Bless those who persecute you • Do not repay anyone evil • Do not take revenge • …if you enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. Matt: 5:44 – Love your enemies and pray for those that persecute you…

  6. Romans 12:9 – Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. 1 Corinthians 13:4 – Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

  7. The Law, or law, can not save or change us • Hebrews 7:18-19 – The former regulation is set aside because it was weak and useless (for the law made nothing perfect), and a better hope is introduced, by which we draw near to God. • Hebrews 10:1-2 - The law is only a shadow of the good things that are coming—not the realities themselves. For this reason it can never, by the same sacrifices repeated endlessly year after year, make perfect those who draw near to worship. 2 Otherwise, would they not have stopped being offered? For the worshipers would have been cleansed once for all, and would no longer have felt guilty for their sins.

  8. Romans I. Introduction, 1:1-17 II. Mankind guilty before God, 1:18 - 3:20 III. Justification by faith alone, 3:21 - ch. 4 IV. The fruits of justification, ch. 5-8 V. Israel’s relation to the church, ch. 9-11 VI. Practical Christian living, ch. 12 - 15:13 VII. Paul’s missionary plans, 15:14-33

  9. Romans 3: 10-18 There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God. All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one. Their throats are open graves; their tongues practice deceit. The poison of vipers is on their lips. Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness. Their feet are swift to shed blood; ruin and misery mark their ways, and the way of peace they do not know. There is no fear of God before their eyes.

  10. Doctrine of Original Sin • Condition of radical corruption, or total depravity, is the fallen state known as original sin. • Does not refer to the first sin committed by Adam and Eve, but to the result of that first sin. • “…the idea of mankind’s basic goodness is a cardinal tenet of humanistic philosophy. It also pervades modern American evangelicalism if recent polls are at all accurate. In a Gallup Poll the overwhelming majority of professing evangelicals indicated their agreement with the proposition that people are “basically good”. – RC Sproll, What is Reformed Theology?

  12. Justification Rom. 3:23-24 – all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace… Rom. 8:33 - …it is God who justifies. Romans 4:7 – Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord will never count against him.

  13. Justification The Gospel says you are more sinful and flawed than you ever dared believe, but more accepted and loved than you ever dared hope. --Tim Keller

  14. Romans 12:9 – Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. What stops us from sincere love? • James 4 - What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. • Proverbs 18:1 - An unfriendly person pursues selfish ends and against all sound judgment starts quarrels.

  15. Romans 12 • Be devoted to one another • Honor one another above yourselves • Be patient in affliction • Share with people who are in need • Bless those who persecute you • Do not be proud • Do not be conceited • Do not repay anyone evil for evil • Live at peace with everyone • Do not take revenge

  16. Romans 12:9 – Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Genesis 39:12 - …But he left his cloak in her hand and ran out of the house. 2 Tim 2:22 – Flee the evil desires of youth… 1 Cor. 14:20 – In regard to evil be infants… 1 Thess. 5:22 – Avoid every kind of evil…

  17. Matthew 7:21-23 - Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’
