  1. VIVAT – Rome OMIJPIC Meeting of regions 20-25 October 2009

  2. OMI at the United Nations Early in 2005 we were accredited to the United Nations as a non-governmental organization by the Department of Public Information (DPI). Soon thereafter, it was decided that we would seek to be members of VIVAT INTERNATIONAL.

  3. The start … 1996 : The general councils of the SVD and SSpS take up a growing concern. 1997 : SSpS-SVD JUPIC take it upin  Portugal 1998 : PANAM assembly of JUPIC in Bolivia. The two congregations together began to investigate.

  4. VIVAT: Points of Reference November of 2000:  Begin (SVD & SSpS) April of 2001: VIVAT website is created: www.vivatinternational.org July 23rd 2004: VIVAT receives official recognition by the Economic and Social Council of the UN (ECOSOC).

  6. VIVAT: Points of Reference (2) December 15th 2004 VIVAT is recognized as NGO by DPI of the UN. 2005, Other religious congregations join VIVAT as associate members – amongst them the OMI. By 2007: 8 congregations are part of VIVAT. 2009 - Other congregations ask to join. A 2 year moratorium is set in order to allow time to assure functionality of VIVAT International.

  7. Vision We share the vision that our world and every single human being have been created good and with dignity. We believe in the equal rights and dignity of all persons, peoples and cultures. Thus, we commit ourselves to struggle for justice, harmony and reconciliation in the world.

  8. OBJECTIVES Create a network of action between the members, and especially promote collaboration with the United Nations in order to obtain common objectives: peace, respect for human rights, just and harmonious relations between peoples and nations, and social, economic and ecological well-being.

OBJETIVES (2) • Transmit information in order to awaken and maintain the attention of our members. • Bring together ideas and experiences of the members in the field and transmit them to competent organizations, especially to the United Nations. • Create collaborative links with other agencies and NGOs.

  10. NAME THE name VIVAT comes from the latin “vivere”, which means “that they may have life”. It expresses the profound desire that all which exists may have life That each person may have life Thatall creation may have life

  14. Where do NGO’s have a voice and influence? NGOs SECRETARIAT GENERAL ASSEMBLY Trusteeship Council SECURITY COUNCIL INTERNACIONAL COURT OF JUSTICE

  15. ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL COUNCIL Main Forum for: Economic affairs such as: commerce, transport, economic development Social affairs such as: population, children, housing, rights of women, social discrimination, drug trafficking,, crime, social well-being, youth, human development and food.

The formulation of political action in each sector of specific activity, through ECOSOC commissions depends largely on experiences in the field, stories of on-site visits and recommendations made by NGOs working in developing countries. NGO committees take on an important role and bring significant contributions to the UN by collaborating in the work with ECOSOC commissions, committees and agencies.

VIVAT aims at and responds to JPIC problems at two levels: The Nature and style of VIVAT activities • From a popular perspective: • Working with affected persons • Networking with other NGOs • Being intermediaries and influencing governments in what concerns making effective commitments made at both the national and international levels, as well as at the UN. • At the level of people • At a structural level

STATISTICS WE ARE 20,166 Sisters, Brothers and Priests members of 8 religious congregations working in 126 countries or dependencies Those in formation are not included in the statistics, nor are the large number of men and women who collaborate in our Congregations’ JPIC mission as we lack information WE NETWORK WITH MORE THAN 40 REPRESENTATIVES OF RELIGIOUS CONGREGATIONS, AND WITH OTHER FAITH-BASED NGO’S
