  2. Is This Hour Any Different?

  3. We Are Here To Remember Jesus’ Life, Death, Burial, and Resurrection

  4. Context: Chapter 11 • Two Examples of Not Showing Respect for God or Others:

  5. Chapters 12 and 13: • Chapter 12 provides reasons for respect and chapter 13 shows love in action.

  6. Chapter 14: 1-25 • Showing respect to God and others in worship by desiring prophecy over tongues.

  7. 1 Corinthians 14:26-40 on page 1788. • 26 What then shall we say, brothers? When you come together, everyone has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. All of these must be done for the strengthening of the church. • 39 Therefore, my brothers, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues. 40 But everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way.

  8. Verse 26: • 26 What then shall we say, brothers? When you come together, everyone has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. All of these must be done for the strengthening of the church.

  9. Verses 27-28 • 27 If anyone speaks in a tongue, two--or at the most three--should speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret. 28 If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet(silent)in the church and speak to himself and God.

  10. Verses 29-32 • 29 Two or three prophets should speak, and the others should weigh carefully what is said.30 And if a revelation comes to someone who is sitting down, the first speaker should stop. 31 For you can all prophesy in turn so that everyone may be instructed and encouraged. 32 The spirits of prophets are subject to the control of prophets. 33 For God is not a God of disorder but of peace.

  11. Verse 34 • As in all the congregations of the saints, 34 women should remain silent(same word in verses 28 and 30) in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the Law says.

  12. Submission? • Hebrews 12:9 Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of our spirits and live! • And James 4:7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

  13. Verse 35: • 35 If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church. • Literally - ugly, deformed, fig. in the NT of what is disgraceful, shameful

  14. God’s Choice: • If we like it today or not God has always led men and women and always selected men as leaders.

  15. Where, when, and why… • Women are not inferior, and God has gifted everyone; male or female and He expects us to use our gifts. The gift is under the control of the person; where, when, why, and how all matter!

  16. Verses 36-40: • 36 Did the word of God originate with you? Or are you the only people it has reached? 37 If anybody thinks he is a prophet or spiritually gifted, let him acknowledge that what I am writing to you is the Lord's command. 38 If he ignores this, he himself will be ignored. • 39 Therefore, my brothers, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues. 40 But everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way.

  17. What does this mean to our ladies? • Use your gifts! • If you can sing, then sing. If you can serve, then serve. If you can teach, then teach. If you can encourage, then encourage… • God wants you to use your gifts so let’s work out the how, and when.

  18. What does this mean to the men? • Use your gifts! • Take leadership seriously. • Be the best leader that you can be. • Develop your gifts and use them responsibly.

  19. Think About It: • Are you gifted by God? • Do you know your gifts? • How are you using them in day to day life? • How do you use your gifts during our worship service? • Worship is not about you or I, it is about God and so we need to continue to serve Him as He says.

  20. Next Week: • Next week we move on to the resurrection theme in chapter 15 starting with the importance of the resurrection of Jesus.
