Information Revolution • Digitization: using computers to store, manipulate and transmit information in form of speech, text, data, and video more cheaply and faster than every before. • Networking: distributed, fast digital networks wired and wireless • Convergence: refers to merging of what were three separate industries: telecommunications, computing, and electronics or broadcasting

Impacts • Changed the way we work • Accelerated space time compression: globalization processes • Convergence of computers and distribution allows greater efficiency of control and communication • Average person is now estimated to spend 187 hours a year on line ( source: Penguin Media and Information 2003)

  5. Characteristics of New Media • Convergence of telecommunications and entertainment/broadcast media industries • Wire or wireless communication • Point to point or addressable • Interactive ( two way) ( now multiple conferencing)

  6. Technical Potentials of the New Media • Costs of production dropping: makes media creation more accessible ( digital camera and access to the net) • Costs of distribution down • Interactive and less hierarchical • Faster and more global

  7. The Importance of Social Media • Social media networks are a highly efficient platform for conveying content, something which was totally in the domain of the broadcasters for almost a century. The issue is not whether radio broadcasters should stay away from this media revolution, the crucial issue is how best to make the use of this tremendous opportunity to reach our audiences. And what are the potential challenges and opportunities of radio programming for the social networks? Is there still a space for them on these platforms? This session addresses these opportunities and challenges.

New Culture Response to the New Media • Development of the Internet and social media has changed the way or people culture to communicate and seek for information • Has changed the role of media in providing information services to the public • From the culture of listening to the radio, watching television and reading newspapers towards the convergence of media • All functions combined in one service (one stop service)

  9. Technology and New Media as Opportunity From the beginning, in 2008 until now social media in Indonesia is experiencing a remarkable improvement. Internet users in Indonesia: 62.9 million Cell-phone users in Indonesia: 220 million Facebook users in Indonesia: 47 million Twitter users in Indonesia: 19.7 million   * Data source: RI MCIT

  10. Social Media • Indonesia has a huge radio audience with access to both public service andcommercial radio broadcasts. Even the Community Radio has a role toplay in Indonesia. Organization and program promotion is a crucial task for public radio, something that brings not only in reward but in any purpose as well.

New Media Utilization • RRI always runs the Survey before implementing the New Media to support its broadcast, depending on what the audiences want. • The tendencies of RRI audiences use more Facebook and Tweeter, WhatsApp, and Blackberry Messenger, Few of them use another ones. So, we try to accommodate them.

  14. Media Convergence • In providing information services to the public, RRI has also developed a pattern of media convergence services with the pattern 3 in 1. • RRI ha developed audio, video and text services through the RRI Play and website: www.rri.co.id

RRI Play • By accessing RRIPlay, we can enjoy diverse information and entertainment easily because RRI now, is one click away. • Download the Apps on “Google playstore” for android phone, and on “Applestore” for Iphone. • On RRIPlay we can find any informative and entertaining features. • The new breakthrough found in RRIPlay is “Radio Picture”, The feature of audio-visual where we can enjoy the broadcast radio in a different way. Just download the Apps and we can find the audio-visual broadcast from RRI Surabaya, Yogyakarta, RRI Palembang and Indonesian Zone.

Podcasting on RRIPlay • As the Radio that has been established and run since the days of struggle for Indonesian independence, RRI has a huge collection of complete songs in the form of LPs (black plate). • RRI now is doing the migration proses from LPs Collection to Digital Collection. Later, we will find all of RRI classic songs collection in Podcast feature on RRIPlay.

Improving RRI Broadcast Service • RRI as a public broadcasting has transformed in service broadcasts. • Changes in the journalism form through news gathering, news producing and news distributing • RRI not only as gatekeeper of information but it’s also as information sharing center. • Radio and Television are on the cutting edge of technology with HD, podcasting, internet streaming, custom online programming, social networking, mobile radio, and a move toward electronic measurement. Broadcasting media should be courage to implement them with measurable way depends on what the audiences and viewers want. RRI is also using new media and video teleconference to support workshops and training. • Clear Channel Radio and Television are taking the lead in creating a better listening and watching environment. The technology and new media will answer this.

  20. RRI broadcasts for emergency response • In emergency situations of natural disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, in its broadcast, RRI greatly helped by the existence of social media. • Indonesia lies on the ring of fire which is surrounded by 400 volcanoes; 130 of them are active volcanoes. • RRI keeps on broadcasting periodically the steps that must be done in case of disasters and to develop the broadcast of early warning system. • Recently, we have used WhatsApp and Tweeter to spread the Information about the impact of Kelud eruption that arrived in Yogyakarta and broadcasted on RRI pro1. The source of the information is Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono, the Governor of Yogyakarta and also the King of the citizen of Central Java. It was bringing RRI to be people partner for sharing information The Technology and New Media.

  22. Good Impact of New Media and Social Media to RRI Training • Facilitate long distance learning process arranged from RRI Headquarter in Jakarta to 85 (eighty-five) RRI local stations. • Facilitate many more participants invited to the learning process at the same time. • Economize/remove the transportation budget from local stations to Jakarta, accommodation and meals as well.

Quick Count Training • RRI organize quick count to broadcast the Indonesian legislative election: 9 April 2014, and the presidential election: 9 October 2014. • Quick report is implemented to know the number of the vote as the temporary result of both elections. • For “Quick count”, RRI hire 2000 contributors come from all of Indonesian regions. • Quick count Training implemented trhough new media which connected to VVNIP to all over RRI local stations, that run four times a month.

  24. Legacy and New Wave • Social measurement and analysis must become a block in the foundation of any intelligence program. When performed correctly, Social and New Media analytics can unlock the value content, allowing the organization to better engage the fan base, and optimize Public Broadcasting Services could not be left behind compared to private radio. • The Information is out there, it’s publicly available. And it’s ready to be used. • The organizations that build comprehensive analytical program around it will be rewarded. • The organizations that continue with traditional services models for analysis and measurement will be left behind. • As the Public Broadcasting Services, the organization should run not only the traditional services models but also it should develop program through the New Wave.
