  1. Non- Technical Tips for Upgrading GPUG Summit 2010

  2. Non-Technical Tips for Upgrading Today’s discussion will center around the non-technical aspects of an upgrade. Many of the items presented are not specific to GP, but rather are specific to any upgrade project, and if not monitored and controlled, can lead to either failures or delays of an upgrade project (neither which is an acceptable outcome).

  3. “If there is no plan….any destination will do!”

  4. How Does My Company Start Down the Road to an Upgrade? • Don’t Consider this an IT Project • Need Executive Management Commitment Up Front • Time spent in evaluation will pay off later during the project, don’t be cheap! • What’s Driving the Upgrade? • Right source = business needs • Wrong choice = IT folks are bored, keeping up with the Jones’, wanting to be on the ‘latest and greatest’ version of GP

  5. Things to Keep in Mind with Any Upgrade • Not just an IT Project! • Get your users engaged early and often. • You cannot test too much • Extremely important to manage the ‘people’ side of the upgrade. • Folks do not like change, know how to manage change to ensure support for the upgrade. • Do not stick to unrealistic deadlines or deliverables. • Pay now or pay later. • Without Executive Management support, your upgrade project will have a greater risk of not being successful.

  6. EMOTIONAL CYCLE OF CHANGE Phase I. Uninformed Optimism Optimism Phase IV. Informed Optimism Phase II. Reality Phase III. A) Determination & Commitment or Pessimism B) Giving Up

  7. Non - Technical Tips for Upgrading Wrap-Up • Thanks for joining us! • Be sure to fill out session evaluations
