  2. Agenda • Severn words that can change your world. • How to use them • When to use them

  3. The Seven Words. How can Severn words change you. What about the ten commandments? What about the marriage vows? All these are short and sharp but change things for ever.

  4. The Seven Words. Bookshelves are full of Asset management and Asset integrity books These seven words encapsulate the thought process.

  5. The Seven Words. The words. • Observe • Normal • Why • What If • Take Responsibility • Care • Read the book.

  6. The Seven Words. The End ! Thank you? No so fast.

  7. The Seven Words. How can these seven words help? One by one they are not too powerful Linked together they allow • You • Your staff • Your family • To think • And more importantly care.

  8. The Seven Words. One By One OBSERVE To observe, you need to see the item, not just look at it See how it is And Record in the brain, its condition.

  9. The Seven Words. One By One OBSERVE We need to do more than just look Use our Non Destructive Tools ? All 5 of them • Sight • Sound • Smell • Feel heat • Feel vibrations • Taste

  10. The Seven Words. One By One NORMAL To find what the normal state is, you need to OBSERVE. What is normal ? When the same conditions apply to the equipment it will be • Running at the same temperature • Make the same noise • Vibrating the same • At the same pressure • and so on • SAME

  11. The Seven Words. One By One NORMAL To know what the normal state is you need to OBSERVE. Knowing what is Normal is not just readings on a chart It is the feel the sixth sense. By definition if it is no longer normal You automatically know what is Abnormal. It has changed It is not the same

  12. The Seven Words. One By One Why. Why has it changed? What has changed, is it • Hotter • Cooler • Vibrating more • Vibrating less • Noisier • Quieter • More or less

  13. The Seven Words. One By One Why. The abnormality is an issue. The reason for the change can be • We are drilling heavier with more power being needed • Have we stopped drilling • Or we are still at steady state Each change in condition Will change your equipment. Change from yesterdays Normal, which was at a specific condition

  14. The Seven Words. One By One Why. Why has it changed? Is the change directly related to the change in circumstances? Is the difference • Justifiable • Expected, from history • Or NOT? • Is the issue now a problem

  15. The Seven Words. One By One Why. A good maintenance man, like a 3 year old, never stops asking why? It is NO LONGER NORMAL……. Why ? Is that change acceptable? Is that change expected? Or is the change worrying Has the issue become a problem?

  16. The Seven Words. One By One WHAT IF What if I do nothing? What if I do some thing?

  17. The Seven Words. One By One WHAT IF If I leave it and put my head in the sand will it run till I go home? Do I know what is wrong? Can I fix it? I should, but cannot, then better ……return to point one… Will it deteriorate Will it cause down time Will it hurt someone Could it hurt me!

  18. The Seven Words. One By One WHAT IF Rules and regulations often say “You are responsible for your actions” And “you are responsible for your to your inactions” DOING NOTHING IS NOT AN OPTION.

  19. The Seven Words. One By One Take Responsibility The rules say so ………but The company has given the worker the responsibility to work safe The worker has the responsibility to carry out the company requests safely Well trained, experienced and competent men will take this responsibility Poorly qualified, inexperienced and unsupported people are not likely to take the responsibility

  20. The Seven Words. One By One Take Responsibility Who’s asset is it? • The operators asset? • The companies asset? • Your asset? • Not mine! • My asset? The man who says MY ASSET has taken responsibility He may not go the extra mile but he will go to the mile post

  21. The Seven Words. One By One Care What do you care about Who wins the super bowl What will the traffic be like on the beltway tonight Is my pay check in the bank Will I get home with 10 fingers and 10 toes Will I make sure everyone else gets home with 10 fingers and 10 toes I will keep the asset running, no matter what I will keep the asset safe

  22. The Seven Words. One By One Care What do you care about? I take pride in my job I care for people and the asset I want MY asset to be the best.

  23. The Seven Words. One By One Care The asset which has a crew that cares Will be • The cleanest • Have less down time • Have fewer accidents • Retain people easier • Be happier • Why • They are team not a crew.

  24. The Seven Words. One By One Read The Book (R.T.B.) Obvious? Albert Einstein is quoted as saying “I never commit to memory anything I can easily look up in a book” A very intelligent man. Would you trust an airline pilot who took off by using his memory to do the pre flight checks Intelligent people but they RTB.

  25. The Seven Words. How to use them During your job. • The daily walk round • The daily checks • Daily maintenance • Daily routines • Shift inspections What about • Your drive to the office • Drive to work • Listening to the washing machine • Observing your car

  26. The Seven Words. How to use them It takes time to get normal set points and criteria of equipment It takes observations every time you pass things Once normal has been registered Any change will be noted Is the change an issue or a problem I take action because I am responsible and I care. I verify conditions by reading the book

  27. The Seven Words. When to use them Observation is during Every moment Of every day At work At home Traveling At the ball game Always

  28. The Seven Words. Questions

  29. The Seven Words. Recap • Observe…………………………..Always • Normal…………………………….Know your equipment • Why………………………………..Has it changed • What If……………………………..I do / do not do anything. • Take Responsibility………………It is MY Asset • Care………………………………..I want to be safe and be the best • Read the book…………………….I cant and don’t need to remember it all
