  1. Designing smart ICT solutions for next-generation electricity grids Valentin Robu Institute of Sensors, Signals and Systems 09September2014

  2. What is “Smart Grid” research? • Electricity grids are changing fast: • Increasing decentralisation (many parties, autonomous) • New demands (e.g. widespread use of electric vehicles) • Intermittent supply (e.g. renewable resources) • Smart Grid technologies manage these challenges • Smart sensing, condition monitoring • Learning, modelling and prediction • Decentralised control (using AI techniques) • “Big Data” challenges

  3. Directions in our Smart Grid research Electric Vehicles Virtual Power Plants Demand-side management Group Buying Coalitions

  4. Potential collaborations • Electric vehicle manufacturers • EV manufacturers, charging infrastructure • Using EVs for Grid storage (V2G). • Renewable energy providers • Prediction, monitoring, Grid integration. • Companies interested in energy management • Demand response programmes • Management of storage devices
