Organic Certification under NPOP • National Program on Organic Production (NPOP) under is being implemented by the Ministry of Commerce & Industry for exports under the Foreign Trade Development Regulations (FTDR) Act since October 2001. • With the launch of National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP), the exports of organic food has grown from Rs 62 crores in (2002-2003) to Rs 2,100 crores (US$ 327 million).

MAJOR STAKEHOLDERS • Progressive farmers / NGOs implementing Grower Groups • MoC – APEDA implementing NPOP • MoA – NCOF ( promotion) • DMI/FSSAI(domestic market) • States Governments promoting organic farming under RKVY, NHM and NCOF schemes of MOA • Certification Bodies • Organic Industry • Consumers

  6. SCOPE OF CERTIFICATION • EXISTING CATEGORIES • Cultivated Crops • Wild Collection • Processed food products (single/multi ingredients) • Chain of custody (traders, storage, transport, export) • NEW CATEGORIES (new categories notified in June 2015) • Aquaculture, • Livestock

Steps in an inspection and certification system • Application to Certifier • Information brochure including tariff • Signing contract • On site inspection, visit to fields etc • Risk Assessment • Assessment of Production system • Review of records & Documentation checks • Interview of responsible persons • Preparation of Inspection report • Evaluation /review • Non conformities & Corrective actions • Certification Decision • Issuance of Scope Certificate • Transactions of organic goods

  8. Grower Group Certification • Grower Groups are organized group of farmers /producers who intend to produce organic products/engage in organic processes in accordance with the National Standards of Organic Production.
