  5. UfM in short |Governance The co-presidency The UfM is chaired by 2 co-presidents, one from the North: the European Union, and a rotating one from the South : Jordan. The Senior Officials The Senior Officials of the 43 countries are mandated to deal with all aspects of UFM. The Secretariat Based in Barcelona, it is led by a Secretary General, assisted by 6 Deputy Secretary Generals for the 6 priority areas. It is financed by the European Commission and contributions by member countries.

UfM in short |Addedvalue Support of 43 countries Through the UfM label, the project promoter gains the support of 43 countries, this awareness and visibility helps him to further raise support and mobilize partners. Facilitate access to finance The UfM Secretariat acts as a one stop shop through which project promoters gain access to a strong network of donors and financial institutions, from the Mediterranean region and beyond. Governmental engineering The UfM Secretariat’s mandate allows it to overcome difficulties in regional initiatives and mobilize governments and stakeholders towards a project’s success. Make a project idea become a reality The Secretariat’s network of Euro-Mediterranean partners as well as its in-house & external expertise help a project idea become a reality on the ground.

Activities of the UfM in urban policy Mandate by UfM Ministers (10 November 2011) to prepare the UfM Sustainable Urban Strategy • Call for the elaboration of a Euro-Mediterranean sustainable urban strategy, respecting the specific pace of economic, social and environmental development of each state that could be based on the following preparatory work, to be formulated by the concerned Senior Official Experts with the support of the Secretariat of the UfM;

The key points of the UfM urban strategy • Multi-level strategy be oriented towards the identification of high-quality projects having most socio-economic impact and cumulated experience shows that concrete actions are needed to make progress. • An integrated and comprehensive approach • A good governance • The ensurance of the efficient use of public money and maximise effectiveness in public action, in link with the capability of the managing of dedicated funds • The support by a spatial substainable strategy for economic development • An urban programming wich is secure with solid garantees of commitment from representatives of potential private investor

In a nutshell The UfM is a unique Mediterranean platform promoting : Strong political commitment and collective solidarity, with 43 countries representing an overall population of 800 million citizens. Co-ownership between the European Union and the Mediterranean countries. Regional and sub-regional integration, through large projects to develop transport, energy and water infrastructures. Concrete projects to meet the needs of Mediterranean citizens. Better adaptation to the current regional context,with a focus on the development of SMEs and job creation.
