  5. Quench Protection • Progress on the quench protection efforts. • What is done or planned on the 1 m model to study/address open questions about quench protection • what are the foreseen next steps in January and February. • Discussion with Bernhard over Skype of quench protection note from CERN – October 2012 • Result comparison – CERN results are now closer to FNAL results (2011) • Preparation of quench protection experimental study in MBHSP02 – December-January • WAMSDO – 11 T dipole – QP modeling and experimental studies • Discussion on FNAL-CERN video meeting in January 2013

  6. FY2013 baseline plan

  7. MBHSP01 autopsy Autopsy steps (September 2012): • Cutting end plates and skin • Clamp and yoke removal • collar-yoke interface, shim inspection • Collar removal • keys, collar-protection shoe interface, ground insulation, heater inspection • Coil inspection • mid-plane shims, all surfaces, leads • Coil size measurements Timeline: September-December Status: • Done, autopsy results and warm magnetic measurements have been presented at the 1st FNAL-CERN video meeting on November 27, 2012.

  8. MBHSP02 Status • MBHSP02 is a 1 m long version of MBHSP01 • Cable: • RRP-150/169 strand • 12x0.025 mm2 SS core • 3 ULs (~650 m) produced • Coils: • ~1 m long • optimized parts and process • MBH05 – done • MBH06 – damaged during IL curing • MBH07 – done • Structure: • Collar packs – modified MBHSP01 • Yoke – available from MBHSP01 • Skin – reinforced HQM bolted skin • MBHSP02 assembly: • coil instrumentation – complete • quench antenna – fabricated and installed • shim plan - complete • coil assembly - in progress with the installation of the ground insulation • collaring and keying - expected to be completed by next week

  9. Strand and Cable Strand: • 152 kg in November 2010 • Expected delivery - February 2012 • Delivered – ~90 kg in July, + ~60 kg in October 2012 • ~20kG – October 2012 (RRR issues) • ~40 kg – January 2013 (changed to Ti based ternary in November 2012) • 152 kg in April 2011 • Expected delivery – August 2012 • new delivery date – February 2013 (changed to Ti based ternary in December 2012) • Submitted PO for 120 kg+120 kg in August • RRP-108/127 (Ta based ternary) • Expected delivery date – February 2013 (if ordered in FY12) • Status: unknown • Possible changes – Ti based ternary (now), RRP-150/169 (after MBHSP02) Cable: • Plan (September 2012 review) • 3 UL of 220 m each (~120 kg) – October 2012 • 3 UL of 220 m each (120 kg) – March 2013 • 5 coils + UL to CERN • ~60 kg left – not enough for 5.5 m long coil! • Status (November 2012) • ~300 m Cu strand, 13.7 mm SS core, single pass – forming fixture commissioning • ~150 m RRP108/127 (+4 strands RRP114/127), 13.7 mm SS core, single pass (cable roping) • ~185 m RRP108/127, 13 mm SS core, single pass (cable roping) • 1 UL ~210 m RRP108/127, 13 mm SS core, two passes with intermediate anneal • 2 m long coil #1 – Dec-Jan • 1 UL will be produced in January • 2 m long coil #2 – Jan-Feb • ~4 UL will be produced in March 2013 • Coils #3 and #4 + spare

  10. Coils • Components – available • End parts – being inspected • MBH08: • Coil winding tooling setup - complete • Cable insulation - underway and expected to be complete today • Coil winding - to begin this week

  11. Collar, yoke, skin • Collar: • RFQ’s, one for EDM and the other for stamping, both using 316 series stainless steel have been sent out and replies received • vendor visit is completed and vendor was selected to make collar laminations for next series of 2 m magnets • First article inspection – January 2013 • Procurement – February 2012 • Yoke laminations - available • Skin - fabrication of 2 m long bolted shell assembly parts has begun.

  12. Design work • Collar shoe thickness increased, drawing revised. • Lift features added to collar design, revised drawing in progress. • Adapter for collar lifting fixture to lift collared coil assembly is in progress. • Coil end part revision based on lessons learned for future coils is on hold. • 2-in-1 yoke design has proceeded as far as it can. Waiting for FEA in order to create and release drawings for the mechanical model. • 2m bolt on skin contact tooling design is in checking and nearly complete. • Long coil winding and curing design is at a very low priority. • Long coil reaction and impregnation assembly drawings continue is at a very low priority.
