  1. Angiography & Cardiac Catheterization Uncle Dave’s Rads 2030 By: Jennica Davis Charise Mills Eric Bucker

  2. Angiography • History • Haschek and Lindenthal • January 1896 just 10 weeks after Roentgen’s discovery produce radiograph showing blood vessels.

  3. Angiography • History • Seldinger • 1952 announced a percutaneous method of catheter named Seldinger Technique • Eliminated the surgical risk of exposing the vessel and tissues

  4. Cardiac Catheterization • History • 3000 B.C. Egyptians performed bladder catheterizations using metal pipes • 400 B.C. Hallow reeds and pipes used to study function of cardiac valves

  5. Cardiac Catheterization • History • Bernard (a French Physiologist) • 1844 successful catheterization of the right and left ventricles of a horse • Forssman • 1929 first human catheterization

  6. Cardiac Catheterization • History • 1960’s and 1970’s • Brought tremendous advances in cardiovascular medicine and technology • Radiographic imaging and recording equipment • Physiologic monitoring equipment • Cardiovascular pharmaceuticals and supplies • 1990’s • Second most frequently performed inpatient operative procedure in the US, and the most performed procedures in patients over 65 • 2000’s • The first drug-eluting stent manufactured by Johnson & Johnson

  7. Angiography & Cardiac Catheterization • Equipment

  8. Angiography & Cardiac Catheterization • Equipment

  9. Angiography & Cardiac Catheterization • Equipment

  10. Angiography & Cardiac Catheterization • New Technology in Equipment Previously, multiple black and white image frames had to be reviewed to visualize the contrast medium flow through the blood vessels. Now with the colors of syngo iFlow the representation of contrast from its initial entry into the blood vessels to its flow throughout can be shown in one image.

  11. Angiography & Cardiac Catheterization • New Technology in Equipment Drug-eluting Stents Over the past 2 years, a new generation of drug-eluting stents These stents are coated with a special medication that prevents scar tissue growth in the artery where the stent is placed, significantly reducing the risk of in-stent restenosis.

  12. Angiography • Common Procedures • Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA)

  13. Angiography • Common Procedures • Cerebral Angiograms

  14. Angiography • Other Angiogram Procedures • Thoracic Aortography • Pulmonary Arteriography • Selective Abdominal Visceral Arteriography • Central Venography • Selective Visceral Venography • Peripheral Angiography

  15. Cardiac Catheterization • Cardiac Catheterization Procedure • Coronary Angiograms • Balloon angioplasty (Elective & Emergent) • Permanent Pacemakers • Coronary Stents • Heart valve replacements

  16. Cardiac Catheterization • Cardic Cath Procedure

  17. Angiography & Cardiac Catheterization • Indications • History of Artery diseases • Heart Defects • Heart Blockage / Failure • High blood pressure & cholesterol • Stroke • Sudden Cardiac Arrest • Seizures • Confusion • Trauma

  18. Angiography & Cardiac Catheterization • Contraindications • Allergy to contrast (dye) • Uncontrolled Blood Pressure • Problems with blood coagulation • Kidney failure or dysfunction • Severe anemia • Electrolyte imbalance • Fever • Active systemic infection • Arrhythmia • Uncompensated heart failure

  19. Angiography & Cardiac Catheterization • Risks during & after procedure • hemorrhage • injury to nerves, • a clot in the blood vessel (embolus) • hematoma (an area of swelling caused by a collection of blood) • irregular heart rhythm • Infection • allergic reaction to the contrast • damage to kidneys from contrast • stroke.

  25. Angiography & Cardiac Catheterization • Employment Opportunities • Job Description • Prepare patients for procedures by taking their medical history and answering their questions • Prepare and maintain imaging equipment • Perform noninvasive procedures, such as taking ultrasound images • Analyze the images to check for quality and to ensure adequate coverage of the area being diagnosed • Recognize the difference between normal and abnormal images • Discuss image results with the physician • Help physicians during invasive procedures, such as inserting catheters (small tubes) • Record findings and track patient records

  26. Angiography & Cardiac Catheterization • Employment Opportunities • Hours of Work • Departments may very. IMC has an Angio and Cardiac Cath tech on hand till 6:00 pm and then on call between 6:00 pm and 8:00 am • Monday – Friday on call for weekends
