  2. This afternoon we’ll • Examine benefits of acquiring certification or additional training • Examine Credenda’s Red River College library programs

  3. Credenda’s 1st Library Grads!

  4. You’d like professional training, but… • You have a job • There aren’t any training programs nearby • You feel you’d learn more in a class with an instructor and other students than by correspondence courses

  5. Learn with Credenda • Attend classes from anywhere in the world • Weekly classes with your instructor and classmates • One night per week per course • All courses are 8 weeks long • No textbooks required—all content is online • Train with technology

  6. Accreditation • Credenda Virtual College is a campus for Red River College in Manitoba • Red River has the oldest library technician training program in Canada • Red River’s diploma in Library and Information Technology is recognized by the Canadian Library Association, so can be used across North America

Saskatchewan Education • The Minister of Education has recognized the Red River College Library Training Certificate (10 months) for an AQC • Teachersin Class IV who hold a Professional 'A' Teacher's Certificate may qualify for Class V by meeting the requirements for an AQC • Teachers in Class V who hold a Professional 'A' Teacher's Certificate, a Bachelor of Education degree and have completed one year (30 semester hours) of graduate studies may qualify for Class VI by meeting the requirements for an AQC.

  11. But you’ve been in libraries for years! • You may apply directly to Red River College for recognition of prior learning or to write challenge exams for some courses

  12. So how does it work?

  13. Where do I start? • Library Training Certificate • Can be completed in 10 months or up to 6 six years • Is not a library technician diploma, but rather a certificate providing basic training

  14. Library Training Certificate • Prerequisite course – Internet Research (or earlier courses such as Internet Essentials or Internet in Business) • Introduction To Libraries (prerequisite) • 6 additional courses

  15. The six additional courses • Business Communication I • Introduction to Reference • Children’s Literature • Collection Development • Cataloguing: Introduction (16 weeks) • Cataloguing: Bibliographic Database Management Subject Analysis (16 weeks)

  16. The certificate provides… • Basic training in library technical services • Basic training in library public services

  18. Then on to the diploma… • Library and Information Technology Diploma • Recognized as a two-year library technician diploma • Requires four or five years part time study (one or two years with the certificate and 3 additional years) • Allows you to work full time

  19. Diploma courses • Cover many topics from human resources, to Canadian literature, to desktop publishing, to in-depth reference work in the collection

  20. Field Placements • Diploma requires three field placements in three different types of libraries (e.g. school, public, college) • Challenges processed through Credenda for Field Placement credits • Virtual Field Placements available for those who don’t have access to additional types of libraries in their communities
