NB Core Propositions • Teachers are committed to students and their learning. • Teachers know the subjects they teach and how to teach those subjects to students. • Teachers are responsible for managing and monitoring student learning. • Teachers think systematically about their practice and learn from experience. • Teachers are members of learning communities.

  4. Eligibility Criteria • Possess a baccalaureate degree from an accredited university • Complete three years of successful teaching / counseling / service as a media specialist • Hold a valid teaching license • Pay $2,500 + $65 processing fee

  8. The NBPTS Standards • The standards are the backbone of the process! • Become familiar with them BEFORE you begin writing • You MUST consider the standards in your description, analysis, and reflection

  9. The National Board Certification Process • Four Portfolio Entries • 3 entries = instructional entries • 1 entry = professional accomplishments • Assessment Center Exercises • 6 content-specific exercises

  13. The Assessment Center = 40% • Six Content-Specific Exercises • 30 minutes for each exercise • Standardized testing environment • Practice questions are available online, via study groups and during candidate institute

  14. Support From the State Includes … • Professional leave:Up to three days paid (for state funded candidates) • Full renewal credits:Completion of all the components (if you pass or not – CEUs are applied to transcript in the year you get your scores) • Salary Differential:12% of your base pay

  17. If You’re Ready… Your Next Steps… • Visit the National Board website for candidate information • Apply online by December 31st • Pay the $65.00 Processing Fee • Download the materials for your certification area and review

If You Change Your Mind Once You Get Started … The Withdrawal Process: • Withdrawal by candidates from the certification process is through MyProfile at www.nbpts.org • Pay the $500 fee for withdrawing before the portfolio or assessment center • Repay the $2,500 fee for non-completion or withdrawing after the deadline

Not Quite Ready?Try Take One! • Cost = $395 (some funding available) • Complete one pre-selected video portfolio entry of the NB process • NB Candidates who transfer a Take One! score to their full candidacy receive a $395 credit on their account, thus reducing the $2,500 fee for full NB Certification. • Contact nboffice@cms.k12.nc.usfor more information
