  2. WHY DO WE GET OLD???

CHAMP Study Population • Males aged 70 years and over • Resident in Burwood, Canada Bay or Strathfield LGAs • Live in community (not nursing home) • Sampled from electoral roll • Baseline measures repeated • Two years • Five years (? Seven years) • 4 monthly phone calls to ascertain falls, fractures, hospital admissions, nursing home/hostel admission • Informant interviews by phone

  4. Measurements: broad and rich Self-completed questionnaire (1 hour) THEN Clinic visit (3 hours) • Blood tests (80 mls) • Cognitive function • Questionnaire • Muscle strength • Urinary function • DEXA (bone, muscle, fat)

Progress to Date • Recruitment and baseline data collection: Jan. 2005 to May 2007 • 1705 subjects recruited • 2 year follow-up: Feb. 2007 to October 2009 • 1367 subjects seen at clinic (80%) • 5 year follow-up: - Commenced August 2010 (currently 87% participation rate) Expected total 1100 • Total of 235 deaths to date (and rising)
