  1. Energy Conversions

  2. Physical Science is the study of energy-- • The following all have to do with energy: • speed • momentum • force • work • power • atoms and molecules • density • etc….

  3. Law of Conservation of Energy • energy cannot be created nor destroyed by ordinary means • it is just changed from one form to another • Einstein took this law farther by realizing that if matter is destroyed, energy is created and if energy is destroyed, mass is created • E=mc2 • Question-- then why bother to conserve energy?

  4. Converting Energy • all forms of energy can be converted to other forms (mechanical, heat, chemical, electric, electromagnetic, and nuclear) • example: the chemical energy from the gas in a car changes into mechanical and heat energy as the car moves. • example: plants convert electromagnetic energy (light) to chemical energy (sugar) with photosynthesis • often KE will be converted into PE and vice-versa

  5. PE/KE Skate Park Pendulum

  6. Energy Conversion Example • What energy transformations must happen to light a light bulb? • mechanical energy from the water in a river moves a turbine in a dam that makes…electrical energy in the light bulb that changes to…heat energy and light energy that we can see and feel.
