  1. The RIMS Standards and Practices Committee A Primer on the Standards and Practices Committee (SPC)

  2. What is the SPC? • Established in August 2009 to support the global risk management discipline. • Enable RIMS to increase its profile in the standards and practices arena. • Continue the goal to make RIMS the primary resource in shaping and developing risk management standards.

  3. SPC (Standards & Practices Committee) Mandate • The committee was established with the following expected scope: • To lead, coordinate, develop, assist and/or market national and international standards, best practices, research projects and discipline treatises to support and promote the risk management discipline and assert the role of RIMS and its stategic affiliations and partnerships.

What are ‘Standards’? • Standards are a set of voluntary criteria, voluntary guidelines and best practices used to enhance the quality, performance, reliability and consistency of products, services and/or processes. • Standards may become recognized as industry best practice and a market requirement.

What Else Has SPC Done? • Explored the steps necessary to become a ‘Standards Development Organization’ (SDO) and provided recommendations to the RIMS Board • Have been following legislation relating to standards. • Have been in touch and working with other national and international organizations.

  8. Next Steps • Continue to explore ways to broaden the involvement in the review and introduction of new standards that affect the Risk Management field. • Continue to reach out to national and international organizations connected to risk management.

  9. How Can Local Chapters Be Involved or Provide Feedback? • Stay in touch with the SPC committee members in your area or chapter. • Committee members may be available to speak to your membership. • Provide feedback on anything you hear about in your local industry.
