  1. Does Coronavirus affect fertility and pregnancy? Ever since the novel coronavirus was first detected and identified, it has completely transformed the healthcare system around the world and forced doctors to identify the limitations of the current medical infrastructure. The deadly strain of virus also made lasting impacts on all the facets of modern life, whether it is professional life, education, communication, community life and everything else. Medical teams around the world are now being forced to ask questions that they never thought that they will need to deal with before. One of these questions is of course how pregnant women may respond to the novel Coronavirus and whether it has any impact on a woman’s fertility. With a lot of misinformation and conflicting information going about these days, it is natural that people are feeling tense, anxious and depressed these days. So, let’s have a look at what we know so far for certain and then discuss the impact of this virus on fertility and pregnancy.

  2. Coronavirus disease or the COVID-19 is a condition that is caused by a relatively new or novel strain of Coronavirus, known as SARS-CoV-2. It was discovered only in 2019 and therefore not previously detected in humans. The most common symptoms associated with COVID-19 are fever, breathing trouble and cough. The World Health Organization or WHO declared the outbreak of COVID-19 as pandemic on March 11, 2020. At present, the number of patients across the world is more than 14 million and the numbers are quickly increasing with every passing day. What is COVID-19 and how can it spread? It is important to note that coronavirus is not one single virus but group of viruses which can give rise to respiratory illnesses. The novel coronavirus was first spotted in Wuhan, China sometime in late 2019. Eventually the virus spread to all parts of the world. Most people being affected by the coronavirus complain of persistent cough along with signs of fever and shortness of breath. There are mainly 4 stages of this condition, with the last stage being the most critical. Most people can be treated at their homes under quarantine and in severe advanced stages they should be hospitalized. There are also many cases where the patients do not show any symptoms. If the symptoms of the patients progress to advanced degree, there can be respiratory failure, pneumonia and death. Older men and women are most vulnerable to the issues resulting from advanced complications associated with COVID-19. The novel coronavirus can spread from one person to another when the infected person sneezes or coughs. Hence it is very important to stay away from large gatherings of people where close contact with others is common. The cough droplets may persist in the air and when they are breathed in by others, it can cause them to be infected by the virus. Therefore it is always important to wear face masks while one is outside their homes. You should also wash your hands on a regular basis and use sanitizers to keep your hands sanitized at all times. While washing your hands with soap, you should rub the soap in your hands for at least a period of 20 seconds. Practicing such measures can help you to steer clear of any chances of COVID-19 infections. Can coronavirus give rise to fertility issues? So far there are no signs to suggest that coronavirus can lead to fertility issues. However, you should still consult your medical expert and follow all the precautions that are listed above so that you do not get affected by this virus.

  3. If you are looking to get pregnant soon or are already pregnant, then it is highly important that you steer clear of traveling to countries or areas where there is already an active outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. On the other hand, if you are already affected by the coronavirus, it is important that you avoid conceiving as long as you recover from it. If you want, you can choose to freeze your sperm, embryos or eggs for future use. What can happen in case I become pregnant while being infected with coronavirus? It has been found that conceiving while ill with coronavirus does not pose any increased risks and problems to pregnancy unless a fever with body temperature greater than 102° Fahrenheit or 38.8° Celsius is recorded. The sperm can be negatively affected by the heightened core body temperature. Can coronavirus affect my eggs? So far, there has not been any research to suggest that the novel coronavirus can affect the oocytes. You should try to postpone fertility therapy in case you find yourself having flu- like symptoms. This is even more important if within a period of past two weeks you have come into contact with a person who has been diagnosed with Coronavirus or anyone who has interacted with someone who already has the disease. Can I pass the Coronavirus to my baby while I am pregnant? There is no serious risk of getting infected with the COVID-19 during pregnancy. If you contract this virus, you can take heart from the fact that you won’t likely be susceptible to severe symptoms of COVID-19. There is as of yet no indications to suggest that the coronavirus can be passed on from the mother to the child during pregnancy. Moreover, there is still no evidence to suggest that the coronavirus can lead to birth defects or a loss of pregnancy. However, one study seems to suggest that this virus is not passed from the mother to a child during pregnancy. Since the coronavirus disease has spread to all corners of the world, it is very important that you follow the essential precautionary measures at all times. This is even more so if you are looking to get pregnant.
