Literature Review Objectives • Demonstrate your familiarity with existing knowledge in the field • Direct readers to other literature of interest. • Provide sources for your methods. • Provide editors with a list of potential reviewers • Indicate your point of view, your discipline, your side of a controversy

  2. A Lit Review Addresses Many Questions • Big Question: Has anyone done research like what I’m planning to do? • Smaller specific questions: -What’s the importance of my research? -Why this methodology? • Discussion: how are my results consistent, or not, with previous findings

  3. The Process • Check your files • Search by subject in multiple sources • Search by author • Search by organization • Follow references back in time • Follow references forward • Contact people

  4. Hands On Time • Use the MeSH browser to do a search of your own. • Search at least one concept as a MeSH Major Topic. • Click on the Limits link and select one or more of the options. • Type this into the PubMed search box and click Search. A systematic examination of the citation of prior research in reports of randomized, controlled trials. What happens? Check the Details box. • Click on the Advanced Search link. What can you see and do there?

  5. PubMed Tips • Link from Dana, or bookmark that link • Advanced search -Details -Limits -MeSH Major Topic • Results in Spam folder?

  6. MyNCBI • Saves your search history for 6 months • Saves searches as alerts to rerun on schedule • Allows you to set up your own filters • Allows other interface customizations
