  3. PART 1 Warm-Up Chinese Poems LOOKING AT THE MOON AND THINKING OF ONE FAR AWAY The moon, grown full now over the sea, Brightening the whole of heaven, Brings to separated hearts The long thoughtfulness of night.... It is no darker though I blow out my candle. It is no warmer though I put on my coat. So I leave my message with the moon And turn to my bed, hoping for dreams.

So bright a gleam on the foot of my bed -- Could there have been a frost already? Lifting myself to look, I found that it was moonlight. Sinking back again, I thought suddenly of home.

When the moon has coloured half the house, With the North Star at its height and the South Star setting, I can fed the first motions of the warm air of spring In the singing of an insect at my green-silk window.

Thinking of You- Poem written during the night of the Mid-Autumn Festival of1076 by Su Tung Po When will the moon be clear and bright? With a cup of wine in my hand, I ask the blue sky.I don't know what season it would be in the heavens on this night.I'd like to ride the wind to fly home. Yet I fear the crystal and jade mansions are much too high and cold for me. Dancing with my moon-lit shadow It does not seem like the human world

  7. The moon rounds the red mansion Stoops to silk-pad doors Shines upon the sleepless Bearing no grudgeWhy does the moon tend to be full when people are apart? People may have sorrow or joy, be near or far apart The moon may be dim or bright, wax or wane This has been going on since the beginning of time May we all be blessed with longevity Though far apart, we are still able to share the beauty of the moon together.

Drinking wine In people's haunt I build my cot;Of wheel's and hoof's noise I hear not.How can it leave on me no trace?Secluded heart makes secluded place.I pick fence side asters at will;Carefree I see the southern hill. The mountain air's fresh day and night;Together birds go home in flight. What revelation at this view?Words fail if i try to tell you.

  9. ENDING: The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock: For I have known them all already, known them all Have known the evenings, mornings, afternoons, I have measured out my life with coffee spoons; ... I grow old... I grow old... I shall wear the bottoms of my trousers rolled. ---T.S. Eliot

  17. comments Text Appreciation • I have often felt this way about nature and, especially, the moon. It is a huge source of peace for me and it always makes me feel so connected to the Goddess. If only we could go back to nature and live our lives fully in it, what a different people we would be. If only there were that silence on the earth of long ago.....I find myself so longing for these things, as I am a city dweller. One day I will go back to where we all belong. This I know. To the solitude and peace, to a place where I can really feel the earth breathing and see every star in the sky.

  18. comments • Just goes to show that everything She touches does change • So no matter where a human creature might be in the world, or what cultural influences that creature might have passed through, the Moon still has the same universal appeal She always has had!

We used to be awed by nature. It filled us with wonder. But now we have lost our sense of wonder. We can no longer enjoy that feeling because our lives are full of new things that are made by ourselves but not quite understood by ourselves. As a result, we are no longer what we should be. We have become different persons and are totally confused by these changes.

  25. 6. Today we talk about our lives in terms of glasses, concrete, etc. 7. Generally regarded as sign of progress and blessings to people, they have actually taken us further away from nature. The author feels confused if this is what we want.
