  1. Women in government By Katie Binkley

  2. Female representation in government WHY IS IT NEEDED? It is important for women to hold seats in government so their specific interests are represented. Men making legislative decisions effecting women can’t understand their particular interests. Women in leadership positions are positive role models for young girls.

  3. How much of Washington is female?

  4. Find your representatives • You can find your national congresswomen at: • http://whoismyrepresentative.com/ Local government is just as important! Find your state elected officials at: • http://www.azleg.gov/alisStaticPages/HowToContactMember.asp

  5. How well are we represented?

  6. So how do we increase our presence?

  7. Work towards increasing women in leadership positions • There is a great film about this. Miss Representation examines how the portrayal of women in the media effects women participation in leadership positions—specifically government.

  8. Don’t listen to the opposition • There are many political commentators and politicians who try to paint female politicians as weak, emotional, or try to delegitimize their worth by sexualizing their appearance. • For example: Think of how they portrayed Sarah Palin in the 2008 presidential campaign. • Know these tactics are a way to keep women out of politics—the best way to beat them is to fight them. Get involved in your local community and run for office one day!
