  1. “The Naming of Names” Journal Questions • Explain what is happening to Mars at this point. • Analyze and explain the simile, “The sophisticates came to Mars from Earth, bringing some of the red tape that had crawled across Earth like an alien weed, and letting it grow on Mars wherever it could take root.”

Label the S/V pairs, the clauses, the phrases, and write what type of sentence it is. Sleeping Beauty awoke at the kiss of a scientist and expired at the fatal puncture of his syringe.” (Bradbury 140-141) Think about: On what does the government clearly put emphasis?

Censorship • Motion Picture Production Code (Hayes Code) • Adopted in 1930 and started enforcing it in 1934 • In 1915 a Supreme Court case had decided that free speech did not extend to motion pictures, and that they could be censored • Movies were closely monitored for excessive violence, bad language, plots where the “bay guys” won etc. • Many people were upset because they thought it was overkill and that adults were smart enough not to be swayed by a movie • Lasted until the 60s when they adopted the ratings system that we use today

  5. Romanticism Romanticism: 1800s • Focused on emotion, nature, beauty • Optimistic view of life • Not always concerned with reality • Example- Lord Byron Dark Romanticism Example: Edgar Allan Poe

Realism Realism- Late 1800s • Opposite of Romanticism • Painstakingly detailed representation of the real world…almost like a photograph • Emphasis on science • Emphasis on the ordinary, everyday, trivial, and even sordid side of life • Critical depiction of society • Use of language to give accurate depiction of what it was like to live in that time and place and what people were really like • Example: Stephen Crane

  7. Modernism Modernism- began in the early 1900s • Still the opposite of Romanticism (even more so) • The world is broken and collapsed • The self/humanity is damaged • Loss of hope/faith in the American Dream • Non-traditional Structure • Minimalism • Examples: Hemingway, Fitzgerald
