Guerilla Warfare Planes dropping agent orange Background info. • Agent Orange- a herbicide ( a chemical to remove leaves on plants). • Guerilla warfare • North Vietnamese knew the area well, hid well • Organized army, not necessarily run by government • scattered( not concentrated in one area) • Small Groups- get in and out quickly

Agent Orange Agent Orange barrels Agent Orange • herbicide ( a chemical that kills plants) • Herbicide contaminated with TCDD dioxin. • 1963- Arthur Galston researched on soybeans and found that excess of chemicals= defoliation ( removal of leaves on plants) • 1943- U.S. department of Army studied effects of aerial spraying to destroy enemy food supply • 1962-1971- Operation Ranchhand , U.S sprayed 20 million gallons of Agent Orange .

Agent Orange health effects • After being sprayed veterans felt dizzy, having nose bleeds, and bleeding from the mouth, suffering from skin rashes, and violent headaches. • genetic defects, skin diseases and various cancers. • birth defects in both livestock and humans. • some children were born with as many as sixteen birth defects. • Agent orange affects unborn fetus. • Babies were with missing limbs, two bodies fused together with one set of internal organs, partial or no brain, babies with missing heads, babies that didn’t open their eyes. • there were accounts of babies being born with heads like sheep or poodles, babies with three legs, and three arms and 20 fingers

  5. Ecological effects of Agent Orange: • ecological equilibrium is destroyed • loss of tree cover and reforestation is nearly impossible due to some pioneer species taking over Ex: bamboo • loss of animal species
