Who Am I? By Miss Dolce
I am a home to all sizes of creatures,There is no other home like mine. • I cover more than half of the Earth’s surfaceWith majestic cerulean waves so fine.
Jump right in and discover what it’s like here;It is chilling and peaceful, it’s dark and dim. • Your eyes will soon adjust to my world, • So come along and take a swim.
The deeper we sink, nutrients become harder to find, • so we make the best of what we have here. • The sun’s energy can only go so far, • Because in the dark, it will disappear.
Over a million producers cover me like a blanket; • They provide me with oxygen for life to go on. • They live in the top layer of me, the euphotic zone, • So that the energy of the sun may come upon.
My producers need their sun, for this is their food, • And I know the phytoplankton would agree • For they are one of my most abundant producers, • And though they are petite, they are a big part of me.
Consumers, oh consumers! They are my greatest joy • Because they help my ecosystems thrive • I enjoy the massive blue whales, the playful fish, • and even the friendly otters coming in for a dive.
A prized consumer of my deeper parts is the Anglerfish. • You may see her mesmerizing light and stare. • It helps her to attract her mates and her prey, • So every creature around best beware.
The decomposers in my home are called bottom feeders, • And they love to clean up any mess or dead remains. • There is also plenty of bacteria and fungi, • Which allows the producers their nutrient gains.
Decomposers allow for balance in an ecosystem, • The sea worms and shrimp have given me their word. • Because they will always be there to clear the way; • To think of a life without them would be absurd.
We’ve come to the end of our journey here, • Though there is one thing that I regret to say; • My home has been wounded by outsiders • Who don’t seem to care where we play.
Oil spills and garbage have covered my surface; • You won’t see me cry tears, but it’s true. • This has caused many organisms to become endangered • And the only one who can help is you.
I am so thrilled to have met you all, • And it is crazy how time will fly. • But now aren’t you aching to guess… • My final question? • Who am I?
