  5. Think Outside the Box • Keep an open mind. • Some schools may house your interests differently than you think. • Race relations in the inner city may be in anthropology not psychology or sociology.

  6. A Good Faculty Match • Make sure you are familiar with faculty’s work. • Articles • When you are reading the article look at the date, the person may no longer be working on that subject matter. • See if there are professor or assistant professor (some may be emeritus, visiting or some other designation).

  7. First Contact • E-mail • Professor, department secretary, graduate division • Talk about your research interests, current projects, and ask questions about the professors current works. • Does the school have any programs that pay for you to visit?

  8. Let’s Get Personal • A phone call to follow up- • You may not get a reply to an e-mail • Also try an actual sent letter (stamp is required for those of you who never sent an actual hard copy b4). • Plan a visit even if you have to pay for the flight, IT WORKS!

  9. When to Apply • A deadline is just that, a last day. • Funding goes early, so the sooner you apply the more money in the pot for you. • Gives a chance to follow up to make sure all materials are in.

  10. Money Money Money • There are several Ways to fund our education • Fellowships • Grants • Loans that are forgiven • Husband/wife—Or Not…..

  12. Dealing with Anxiety • Applying to graduate school can be stressful • Being a graduate student is even more taxing So what Should you do?

  13. Walk It Off • Have people you can talk to about your anxieties. • This works during the application process and when you are in grad school (even undergrad) as well.
