Caribbean nations • Cuban revolution of 1959 brings Communist gov. to power only 90 miles away from US shore • Continual tension between the US and Cuba have existed over the last several decades • The Bay of Pigs and the Cuban missile crisis were two of the most serious clashes between Castro’s government and the US • Seeing the communist regime in Cuba as a threat to security the US intervene in other Caribbean nations • For example, US marines were sent to Dominican Republic in 1965 to stop a communist take over
