Introductions • Name: Kerri Gravesande • Major/Minor: • Biology Major • Psychology Minor • Plans when first arriving to college • Enroll in medical school directly after completing undergrad • Plans as of now • Taking a “Building Year”; Recently became a member of AmeriCorp • Attended a medical school panel at Quinnipiac University which was led by a few current students of the Frank H. Netter Medical School of Medicine and learned that’s actually beneficial to take time in between your undergrad and medical school.

Introductions • Name: Yadley Turnier • Major/Minor: • Health Sciences Major • Psychology Minor • Plans when first arriving to college: • PA school after graduation • Plans as of now: • Masters in Public Health Epidemiology concentration • Possibly working in a Public Health laboratory researching diseases • My mom works in nutrition and her and I always keep up with the latest food-borne illnesses.

Introductions • Name: Te Asia Hunter • Major/Minor: • Biomedical Sciences Major • Sociology Minor • Plans When First Arriving to College: • Medical school straight out of undergraduate studies • Plans as of now: • Masters of Public Health (MPH) to study sociomedical sciences and social determinants of health • This choice was influenced by disparities in healthcare across different groups and a desire for more cultural competency in the medical field

Background & Importance of Future Plans What is a Gap Year(s)/Building Year(s)? • “A semester or a year of experiential learning, typically taken after high school and prior to career or post-secondary education, in order to deepen one’s practical, professional, and personal awareness” • Volunteering/Service, Career Exploration/Internship, Paid Work, Free Radical Goal • To enroll in medical school to become a reproductive endocrinologist • To eventually spearhead an organization which aims to educate women of low socioeconomic status on their reproductive health, hardships, and options

  9. Background & Importance of Future Plans Focus: Working in a cutting-edge chronic disease prevention programs (maybe CDC) that collectively work to address these social determinants of health, with an emphasis on policy and systems change to have the broadest impact.

  10. Background & Importance of Future Plans • Focus: Study barriers that different groups in society face that impedes their access to and quality of the healthcare services that they receive. In response, I seek to come up with interventions to better serve these communities.

  11. Rob lives in a low-income, poverty and crime-ridden neighborhood. He’s experienced the deaths of two of his childhood friends. Scenario: What interventions would be beneficial for Rob and others in his neighborhood? • Money • Preconceptions of healthcare workers • Fear of bias from healthcare workers • Lack of medical knowledge • Employment services • Free health clinics • Health education services • Psychiatric services What factors impede Rob’s access to healthcare?

  17. What we wish we knew before beginning our healthcare journey • Do your research • Do not limit yourself to one profession • Have a plan and set goals for yourself • DO NOT BE SO HARD ON YOURSELF • Shadow as many professions as you can

What we wish we knew before beginning our healthcare journey • As college becomes difficult, don’t doubt yourself • The healthcare field is extremely vast but also is not the only avenue for helping others • There are many paths to becoming a physician • Take your time; You don’t have to have the rest of your life planned out at 18 • Chances are, if you do, things will change- ACCEPT THIS CHANGE • There are many opportunities to earn clinical hours and volunteer/community service
