  3. GOLF A set of golf balls sells for $20. This week it is on sale for 30% off. What is the sale price of the set? Method 1Subtract the discount from the regular price. First, find the amount of the discount. 30% of $20 = 0.30  $20 Write 30% as a decimal. = $6.00 The discount is $6.00. Next, subtract the discount from the regular price. $20.00 – $6.00 = $14.00 Example 1

  4. Method 2Subtract the percent of discount from 100%. 100% – 30% = 70% Subtract the discount from 100%. The total cost is 70% of the regular price. 70% of $20 = 0.70  $20 Write 70% as a decimal. = $14.00 Multiply. Answer: So, the sale price of the set of golf balls is $14.00. Example 1

  6. Find the Sale Price PARTY SUPPLIES Sandra is buying decorations for a party. She wants to buy a set of balloons. The original cost of the balloons is $39, but the store is offering a 25% discount. What is the sale price of the balloons including 5.75% tax? Step 1 Find the amount of the discount. 25% of $39 = 0.25 ● $39 Write 25% as a decimal. = $9.75 The discount is $9.75. Step 2 Subtract the discount from the regular price. $39 – $9.75 = $29.25 Example 2

  7. Find the Sale Price Step 3 The percent of tax is applied after the discount is taken. 5.75% of $29.25 = 0.0575 ● 29.25 Write 5.75% as a decimal. = 1.68 The tax is $1.68. Add the tax to the sale price of the balloons. $29.25 + $1.68 = $30.93. Answer: The sale price of the balloons including tax is $30.93. Example 2
