  2. HISTORY OF HORTICULTURAL EDUCATION The history of the University begins in 1853, when Dr. Ferenc ENTZ, a medical doctor, established the School for Practical Gardening. The school came to its present location in 1876. In 1894, it was raised to the rank of Royal School of Horticulture, with three years of training. Faculty of Horticultural Sciences

Main research areas at the Faculty • screening and breeding of varietiesby traditional and molecular breeding technics • biochemical and genetical studies on plant stress reactions in vitro and in vivo (enzymes, defence molecules, resistant germplasm) • development and improvement of environment friendly horticultural technologies (integrated pest managment, ecological farming) • studies on biologically active compounds (antioxidants, essential oils, sacharids),distribution, production and optimalisation in plants) Faculty of Horticultural Science

  30. Experimental and Research Farm — Sector of Ornamental plant growing and nursery 1 Since 1963 this sector is a main base of research and education on more than 30 hectars. It has a continuously widening range of conifer collection (550 taxa), broad leaved and shrub collection (530 taxa), perennial and peony collection (63 taxa), and there are propagation and growing experiments on 3 ha nursery. Main fundamental research areas: Morphology and phenology, rooting and grafting soldering, gene reservation and stress tolerance. Faculty of Horticultural Science
