5. Why do we need a code?
6. Consultation Open Meeting on Dignity in Care;
Questionnaire circulated to around 500 OPRG members;
Literature search – Older Europeans and Dignity European Commission research;
Detailed discussion on OPRG Advisory Group
7. Analysis 51 questionnaires were returned out of 450.
Key themes:
forms of address (79.2%),
maintenance of a respectable appearance (91.8%)
the need for stimulation and a sense of purpose (93.9%);
58% moderately or strongly disagreed that enough assistance is given to service users to eat their meals.
65% moderately or strongly disagreed that enough people know how to access advocacy services or that there are sufficient advocacy services available for vulnerable adults.
8. Headline messages Maintaining human dignity, particularly in the face of adversity, is a core human value.
Respect for personal identity is the critical aspect of dignity that has to be addressed in health and social care.
Reliance on technological solutions to health problems is no substitute for human caring and human values.
